I had the same question a year ago. RP didn't have a recommendation on their site then, so I went with MaxATF, since it seemed to be most compatible with Dexron III.
I have a 97 and I've had no problems, shifts are much better than before.
I've threatened to go with Syncromax, since RP now recommends that for the Vette on their website. A trusted mechanic also told me that the only reason ATF is used in newer manual trannys is to make them easier to shift in sub zero temps.
The thicker syncro maxx will probably protect against wear better. People say it shifts very well too. The one matza ball hanging out there is the paper blocker rings on the early model transmissions, and I don't have a definitive answer as to whether syncromax affects those any differently than Max ATF.

Just did mine Wednesday. Afterwards I noticed minor improvements and wasn't impressed much. Today(well thursday) I have to say it's one of the best improvements I've done. All my annoying problems were resolved it appears. I was jamming the shifter hard to the right to get it into reverse and now just a little effort. That alone was worth the $.
Syncromax for 97-00. I had this stuff for about 8k miles and started to notice harder shifting again so I went to GM spec Penzoil syncromesh and it felt better than the RP, I still use RP in the motor and rear.

I have called the RP tech line and was told their product will not react any different that any other trans fluid with the effect on paper blocker rings. This was in writing per a email response.
I guess the jury is still out on which one for a 98.
I believe it depends on auto vs manual. When I ordered my rp supplies from a rp dealer the rp tech line had recommended Max for a automatic. Give their tech line a call for follow up
