UPDATE- No start problem fixed
My 98 A4 has been acting up for a few months, every now and then when I turn the key it will not crank over, everything else works just no starter. If I tap on the starter it will crank. Last night I jacked it up and pulled the starter. I took it to a starter rebuild shop and had it checked out. On the test bench it would not turn over not even a click. The guy knew what was wrong right away. The two tiny bolts on the back were loose which caused a bad ground. He tightened one bolt with power on and the thing spun,YEPPEEE. So I got him to tear it down and check it anyway. Still looks new he said, that saved a few bills at the dealer. Shop charged twenty bucks to fix it. One thing I did notice is a ground point on the engine block above the starter which had two wires(one big, one small). It had a lot of corrosion build up but easy to get at and clean with the starter down. Car ran fine all day so far. KNOCK ON WOOD
