There is a switch on the outside of the transmission called the "Park Neutral Position" (PNP) switch. The switch reports to the PCM on what gear has been "selected" by the driver. It is how the PCM "knows" the car is either in Park or Neutral for engine start.
You can replace the PNP without having to remove the tranny. You will need to lower the left side exhaust to get to the PNP. The other thing is that installing the new switch requires careful alignment to ensure that when the tranny is in Neutral that is the position the PNP is reporting also.
Thanks so much for the help, the members of the C/F are so helpful .Monday my day is planned out, Im very motivated to fix this problem my backup is a buick real head turner.
