Do these cars have a neutral safety switch? My old Taurus did something like that, and the NSS was the problem.

There is a switch on the outside of the transmission called the "Park Neutral Position" (PNP) switch. The switch reports to the PCM on what gear has been "selected" by the driver. It is how the PCM "knows" the car is either in Park or Neutral for engine start.

You can replace the PNP without having to remove the tranny. You will need to lower the left side exhaust to get to the PNP. The other thing is that installing the new switch requires careful alignment to ensure that when the tranny is in Neutral that is the position the PNP is reporting also.
