Stock springs and pushrods fail even with the stock Ls1 cam at 5000 rpm. I have seen it happen, the pushrod was bent in 2 places and broke in half. I would do both but thats just my opinion.
Choosing a cam is another story. A zo6 cam is not worth the effort in my opinion. Its a good cam if ran with 243 heads but if your doing cam only then step up a few notches.

If you want stock driveability:
Lingenfelter GT2-3
C5 ZO6 Yellow Springs
Comp Cams 7.425" Hardened pushrods
If you want a little rumble you could go a little bigger but you'll have to match the springs.
