Default Headers and dip stick tube

Ok, I have a 1999 C5 auto coupe with a stock exhaust system and I want to change that so I got some JBA shortie headers which look really good except for one thing, the new headers have no ‘bung” welded on it for the dip stick tube.

The stock dip stick tube bolts onto a bung welded onto the stock exhaust system, 3rd pipe from the front on the passenger side.

My question is this:

I think I can buy a newer dip stick tube form a 2001 or newer C5 … does anyone know if this is true or not ??
I think the newer dip stick tube bolts onto one of the header flange bolts. … does anyone know if this is true or not ??

I read that some heads have an extra hole for the dip stick tube, I don’t know if my 99 has this extra hole.

What should I do ??
I could weld a new bung on the JBA headers but I don’t really want to do that because the weld would rust as most welding rod is not Stainless as the JBA headers are.

Thanks for any help.

Very good question.

Newer models (2001+) dipstick tube bolts right to the head so buying a new one probably won't help you unless you have that hole.

What I've seen others do is fabricate a bracket and bolt it where-ever convienent.

I'm thinking that a newer dip stick tube, mounting to a hole that I may not have, would still have a bracket which may make it easier to fabricate a mount so that I can mount it to an existing header bolt.

What do ya think ??

Go to Jeggs and do a search on flexible dipsticks. They come with an adjustable mount and it's a nice piece.

I have an '04 Z06. When I put B&B shorties on my car, there was a bolt hole in the head, into which I bolted the dipstick tube bracket. I attached it after the header was on and I had to bend the corner of the bracket because it hit the header flange.

I don't have the vette here, but I remember the bracket was attached to the tube. You would not be able to slide it up or down to use another attachment point. So I'm not sure if the newer dipstick tube would help if you don't have the required bolt hole.......

Good luck..

You might want to double check, and make sure that you don't have to order a new dip stick for the '01 and newer as well...........I believe you do.
