My ride
Being a senior citizen now, retired engineering manager, made some mods that boosted the available horsepower. I did install the 27002TProgrammer, 1999-03 C5 LS1 Corvette Handheld SLP Custom Tuned DiabloSport II, the SLP Blackwing air filter system, removed the grill from the mass air flow sensor and installed the 1000 cfm throttle body kit. The car has the SLP headers and a Corsa x pipe and indy muffler system. In this configuration the car is very competitive and makes for an excellent daily driver, average 18.5 mpg.
The removal of the grill from the mass air flow sensor allows 1100 cfm of air to be processed by the GM sensor, it is similar to the amount of water you can push through a hose, 1/2" vs 3/4" as an anology, or removing the restrictor plate from a NASCAR motor. The more air diagnosed by the intake manefold sensors, the enrichment of the fuel from the cats to the ECM is therefore in balance even after using the custom programmed SLP custom tuned Diablo Sport II programmer. The engine also has the 1.80" lift kit from SLP to allow the engine to breathe the modifications made.
There is a word of caution, do not remove the grill from the mass air flow sensor if you are using the factory air filter or hurricane or under bumper ram air induction systems. Use the Black Wing if and only if you have not modified the radiator air dam as well. The problem with the aforementioned systems occurred at a local dealer and the buyer of the car drove it in a rare heavy rain in Southern California. The engine froze up due to water intake or hydrauliced as stated by the dealer. This resulted in the dealer being required to install a new motor.
The Black Wing air filter is a combination of cloth and wire mesh to trap any debris comming into the system, and appears like many K&N filters except heavier construction and denser wire mesh.
Enjoy the ride.

What I can say definitively is that the mesh screen on the MAF will not prevent a hydro-locked motor (what you've described in your post). I think it's safe to say your post states "to eliminate the chance of hydro-locking a motor, leave the stock radiator shroud and intake alone".

I dd a lot of testing on the flow bench prior and to actual removal of the scren at the mass air flow sensor, again it is specific only to the SLP blackwing, does not apply to other after market go fast kits which will highdraulic in rain. We sprayed water from two garden hoses with the hood down, full force, and with the engine running (I know dangerous but has to prove my theory, in either case was prepared to Have Connnell Chevrolet replace the motor in the event that water got into the system, it did not, even when shot directly into the screens on the bumper, so in theory and thus far in practice, it has worked well. I know Most Vette owners cringe at this, but often times a research engineer can often over come such disadvanges, The car does not have the cut out for the hurricane. The programmer is the special program as prepared by SLP, not diablo eventhough they use the same programmer, but there are significant changes. At 6300 there is an engine knock but only did this with Steve Calloway who drove the car, Steve said he would give me some updates along the way as this is now a project car. The Calloway is faster than what is projected for the ZR-1. Steve thought we could work a deal on the roots super charger for some assistance in the shop and is a very close frind of a close friend of mine who also loves fast Corvettes. He has a number of Calloway enhancements already. (yes we are both senior citizens and still feel the need of speed, either car will outrun a Ford Intercepter should the need ever arise, in the same league as the Ferrari and Lambo.
I am not quite sure what you mean is not clear, wite me directly and maybe I can answer your questions. Love this car and it is a keeper. Does the front tires leve the ground? This one does in second, third and fourth. I take it easy on 1st as I do not want to replace the rear tires every 10K miles.
Would appreciate hearing from you. The Blackwing scrrens have the heavy mesh screening to prevent stones from getting into the air filer and the air intake volume is approximately 375% greater than stock. The radiator shoud is left untouched. The flow bench showed that the GM factory mass air flow sensor can handle 1150 cfm and the mesh screen in my opinion is nothing more than a resrictor plate used to lower horsepower, The screen was removed carefully with needle nose pliers and was removed with the screen facing the concrete flooring to prevent any damage to the thin air flow sensor wires. I would imagine I got 30 bhp out of this simple mod. It took 2.5 seconds off the 1/4 mile run, before and afters.

Looking forward to discussing this off line as we can share ideas that seem to work and others that are a simple waste of money.

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
Mods: LS-7 complete kit mod from SLP, its about 4 large, they claim 427 hp with the blackwing, air flow sensor mod, lifters changed from 1.7 to 1.8" of throw, Crane Cam-high performance not quite a 3/4 race as the car is street driven. It also started life as a Z-06.
What was not stated previously is it has a supercharger, 6 large and one large to install, running a mild 7 pound boost.
The car was taken to the strip once just to see how it would do in the quarter as I do not wish to abuse it, 11.38 at 128 mph was the record given to me on the run slip. Believe it or not, could care less either way.
Some of the personal emails received from some obnoxious parties have been quite inflamatory and unprofessional and hardly a place or member desired on this forum. As an admonishment, to abuse, threaten, or slander anyone via the internet is a federal crime punishable by 1-5 years on the first offense.
First hand knowledge, as I am a deputy sheriff.
Take a look at his profile and go back and read some of his prior stuff some of it is actually
it is so patently wrong ...* Claims his car started as a Z06 .... it is a coupe (picture in profile)
* In one post claimed it was a FACTORY installed AUTOMATIC transmission in a "Z06" (supposedly one of only 3 made ....
) ... in a later post claimed it was a "Z06" modified to an automatic by an LA dealer* Claims in the above post he's a deputy sheriff ... his profile says "Retired Product Design Engineering Manager"
* Has made so many bizarre statements about what "engine" and mods he has in the car nobody can possibly believe this stuff ......
All I can figure is either a
typing this stuff in from a state mental institution or a
who's 12 years of age and thinks he's
"hangin with the adults" ......My money is one the first one ...... but I admit I keep reading the posts for the entertainment value.

edit... pssst! pssst! Your missing the front Z06 screens. /whisper
