Need help getting Caliper Brackets off HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am trying to get the rotors off to have them Zinc Coated. I have the car up on 4 jack stands. I have the calipers off... The damn caliper bracket bolts are tight!!!!
While was in there I cleaned and Armorall'd the wheel wells :D
Re: Need help getting Caliper Brackets off HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (chuckster)
You are talking about the brackets that surround the caliper? Take an open end wrench for the inside nut and a socket for the outside nut and get some leverage to loosen the bolt that holds the bracket on the caliper.
Re: Need help getting Caliper Brackets off HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (chuckster)
The first time you break the bolts you will need to use a cheater bar. I usually take the handle from my jacks and slide it over a 1/2" driver. This will give you enough leverage to break them.

Oh, I understand what you are talking about now... I forgot what size that bolt is... but it will take a good amount of force to get it off. breaker bars are good... Air tools are better. ;)

chuckster:
The bolts are 20mm as I remember. If you have a 13/16" socket on a 1/2" or larger drive, that will also work just fine. They are a witch to break loose. Use a 24" breaker bar and pull hard. Pull down or push up to break them loose if you are worried about the jack stands, but they should be fine unless you really get radical. When you reinstall the bolts, use some Loctite Red 271 to keep them from coming loose, like that is going to happen.
Torque is 125 Ft. lbs. Not 175 ft. lbs. It is 175 Nm.

Thanks Bro...
Actually I am not worried about getting them back on perfectly. once I get my rotors back I will put em back on and take the car over to the dealer and have my buddy (mechanic) put on my painted calipers and Stainless Steel lines. He can torque the crap out of em there.
Re: Need help getting Caliper Brackets off HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (chuckster)
Chuckster,
I am going to assume you have the hub and bracket assembly turned toward you so you can get a good shot at breaking the bolts loose. If not, turn the steering wheel in the direction that best accomplishes this.
I struggled with mine until I realized how much easier it was this way. DUH!
The bolts will come loose with a breaker bar or attaching a handle to your rachet as mentioned earlier. I have taken several of these brackets off with an 18" breaker bar.
Re: Need help getting Caliper Brackets off HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (chuckster)
Yep, they are a pain to get off, and to re-torque.
I'd love to know how someone managed to find the room for an impact wrench there. Maybe in the front, but sure as heck not in the back!
Doing this on a lift would be MUCH easier. I just use a big breaker bar to start, and then an air ratchet once they're loose. It can be very hard to get the leverage to break them free and to torque them (125 foot pounds). I've strained my back a few times already doing these.
If you're going to be doing this often (like me), you'll want to use Locktite Blue, not Red.
Re: Need help getting Caliper Brackets off HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (chuckster)
Guys thanksfor all your help!!!!
I rented an electric impact hammer this morning.. NADA!!!!!! Just a lot of noise and no motion... Luckily the rental guy did not charge me. :)
Then ran to home depot and bought an 18" Breaker bar with swivel head 1/2 ratchet. And an Impact 13/16 socket. I'll get this bastich!
Turned the front wheel to expose the bolts (the swivel head is really helpful here) Viola!!!!!! Came right off!
The back was tougher but still easy. The driver rear was a Biatch cause you need to point the handle under the car and I could not get leverage to push it up. So I slid the floor jack under the handle....A few pumps later and it was free.
All In all 15 minutes work!!! Breaker bar wins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Rotors and Caliper brakets are Nickel/Zinc plated. And look freakin awesome! Pics to follow.........:D :D

All very helpful information. I am about to put Eradispeeds on my car and suspect I would have run full in to this issue. Now at least I will be prepared and not caught up in a rage of frustration.
