Default My first oil change

Hi
I need advice , I`m changing oil in my vette for the first time , last year i had it done by local american car specialist right after i bought the car.

Now, I bought oil and oil filter from american car service and parts , Clearemont corvette

http://corvette.co.uk/

Now, because I saw few comment about type of oil and i`m not sure now, shall i use this one. I bought 7 ltr of Pennzoil Platinum 10W30 and they send me Fram Extra guard filter. As for the oil i don`t know it ( i don`t even know what`s in now) but the filter ? Is it bad or it`s just matter of personal preference,i don`t want to end up with lower oil pressure and had to buy another 7 liters of oil. (more-less 200$ here)

I jacked up the car so i just have to make a decision , install fram or just buy ac delco ?

Help

Andy

As long as that filter is made to fit your car you will be good.

OK ... couple of issues ....

* Oil - as per your owner's manual ... any oil meeting GM 4718M is fine to use .... look on the labeling on your Pennzoil Platinum and it should state that it meets the GM standard (along with possibly other standards) .... you should be fine as Pennzoil Platinum in most "grades" meets the GM standard.

* Filter - The Fram ExtraGuard filter should be Fram part number PH 3506 .... if it is .... install and have fun .... will work fine.

The oil meets all standards so it`s ok, but i`ll wait until monday and try to buy ac delco or mobil filter.

I can`t find any positive feedback about fram filters anywhere :/ I`ll pass and change oil next week.

Thanks

Regarding Fram filters... I've used them before on various other cars without any noticeable issues... however, I quit using them because the more I looked around, the more I discovered that Fram is considered to be inferior.

Now, you'll probably be fine by using it... but when it comes to a $6 part protecting a $6000-ish engine... that's enough for me to heed the word-of-mouth about Fram. Just for peace of mind, if nothing else!

that oil, and the fram will work fine...
but as he stated, keep in mind that your relying on a 6$ part to protect your engine. IMHO buy the best you can get.
i only use mobil1 5-30 and a mobil1 filter in my car, also, no 'extended milage' oil. just plain mobil1 blue label. tried and true.

few tips to make sure everything is good on your end:

- dont know how you have your car jacked up, but it is preffered that it be level when changing oil, if not a few degrees lower on the front for proper drainage.

- you can get KILLED under the car if a part your using to hold it up fails. this is very serious and i always use a nice hydr. jack, and TWO backup jack stands incase something goes wrong. optimal setup would be a 4post lift or car bay you walk under. safety first!
just be aware and make sure you have your car lifted with pucks, or from a designated jack points on level stable cement, asphault.

-follow torque specs for filter and drain plug. re-tapping your oilpan or buying a new one is NOT fun. thats best case scenario also. if you didnt notice you stripped it and develops a leak....well, you do the math there on what will happen.

-should be able to take filter on/off by hand. not effortlessly though, but with some muscle. its easier to strip things with leveraged tools, keep that in mind, and the filter doesnt need alot of torque.

-when taking filter off, make sure that ALL of the old O-ring came off and isnt stuck to your casing. i always fill my new filter half way full of oil from my supply and put it back in, and lube the new oring with your fingertip and new oil.

-start car up and make sure oil pressure pops back up after a second or so, if not, kill engine immediately.

-check for leaks for the next little bit after you change oil.

Thanks
i lifted the car with hydraulic jack, and it`s on 4 tripods now , leaning a bit foward so the whole oil will get out of the pan. As You said I`ll buy new filter tomorrow if it`s in stock. I`ll go for mobil or ac delco for peace of mind. I want to try this pennzoil, i`ll tale a photo of mobil 1 i currently have (i found bill from last oil change) on peace of paper. I`ve done about 5k miles last year, so next year i`ll do the same thing with this.
Some oils get dark a lot faster than others, I use mobil 1 in my other cars, so far so good, but between changes it`s always very dark , so we`ll se how this one looks like.

I`ll post a photo later.

I believe the best oil filter for increased oil pressure is a WIX or NAPA GOLD (same oil filter). It increased my cold oil pressure 10-15 psi over using DELCO Premium UPF-44 or Mobil 1 oil filter. Since the oil pressure sensor on a C5 is AFTER the oil filter, this means more oil flow. Also got an oil analysis after over 6,000 miles on oil, no difference. Blackstone Labs says they rarely see any difference with different oil filters.

Used oil usually turns darker IF your engine block is iron, on a C5 with aluminum block and heads, it should stay lighter in color longer. Does on my cars (3 chevys and a Nissan).

I wouldn't even allow the fram filter to set next to my car on the workbench. Fram used to be a very good filter now they are absolute junk. Mobil 1 oil was re-formulated a while back and isn't very good oil any more. I found a link that compared various synthetic oils and mobil 1 was among the worst. Apparently Royal Purple smoked them all in this comparison...which is what I put in my car.

Mobil 1 is ok, but I would probably use a Mobil 1 oil filter instread of that fram.

Where did you get your info that Mobil 1 isn't any good anymore, I want to see this, GM still uses it.
Sure RP is great stuff, But a bit over kill for the street in most cases.
