Default Need help to pass inspection

I took my car to get inspected today knowing it wasn't gonna end pretty. It has headers on it and no cats, I passed emissions easily but b/c it was lacking factory emission control parts they wouldn't pass me on the safety inspections. I was hoping they would overlook it b/c it passed emissions and the shop builds some sweet cars, but I guess was too optimistic. Anyway, I was wondering what all do I need to get to put on the car to pass inspection and then take it back off? I live in St. Louis, Mo. It's a 99 Vette with 78mm Fast Intake with 80mm BBK TB, LG Pro long tube headers, no cats, x pipe, and z06 Ti exhaust.

this is what was on the inspection form read for why it failed:
1.) Air Pollution Control Devices Air Injection System
Part of the injection System is missing or dissconnected
2.) Air Pollution Control Devices Catalytic Converters
Converters Missing

PLEASE HELP!!

Taking a guess here but I think the report tells you exactly what you need as it appears you failed the visual inspection... not sure how you passed the sniffer w/o cats (if one is used).

I don't know what is required in your state but putting the cats on would be a good start. Did you remove/block off the AIR tube(s) as part of the installation of the LG Pros? If so, you will probably need to reinstall and reconnect the AIR tube.

Just a guess...

You won't get it to pass without cats. A shop can get stuck with some very heavy fines from the EPA for passing a vehicle with the Federaly mandated cats removed.

I don't understand why people remove them. Go with high flow cats and be done with it.

From the looks of what your report says, you disabled the AIR system when you had the headers installed... and then obviously as noted they failed you on having No-cats visual inspection

I think it's pretty straight forward, you need to put cats back on the car and hook the AIR system back up or you will not pass. My guess is they have that info logged into their system so when you go back, they are gonna pull it up and check it..otherwise what is the point.

Good luck

I figured without the cats it would have been a long shot, but I can get those back on, but I bought the car with the headers already on it and I haven't had much experience with the AIR tube system, any more info would be appreciated.

Put the stuff back on. Cats dont rob u of that much power and the air you breathe is more important than the horsepower you produce.

Default Not good.......

How could you buy a car that did not meet emission test? Doesn't your DMV require a smog cert along with a title and bill of sale?

In Kalifornia if the smog shop is found ( and the state does send goverment agents around with pre -conditioned cars) in violation, they shut down your machine ( loss of income) and fine you or both. There is a long story about how I know 1st hand.

Put the cats and emission control equipment back on. No two ways around it.

and next year find a different inspection station.

New Federal emission laws coming out or just came out about after market equipment, NOT Good.

OBDII Clearing house has some new info.

IN some states OBDII computers are testing for OEM tune or aftermarket tune. YES there is a OEM data base of each cars tune specifications that each states DOT has access too.

I agree, keep the stuff on once you get it on. However, it sounds like you do not have the parts in the first place right? Any forum vendor that sells headers should carry high flow cats. Not cheap but they are good. The AIR system is going to be a PIA. I assume you don't have the parts right? I'd contact one of the guys parting out Vettes on the parts forum. There is a tube with a valve in it that goes from the passengers side header, behind the intake to the drivers side header. On the drivers side there is another valve and a T junction that joins the fresh air tube. The fresh air tube goes to the drivers side nose, at the bottom of the radiator there is the AIR pump. It has another hose that goes to the air cleaner. It has a wiring connection and a vacum hose connection. The connection to the air cleaner can be changed to a stand alone filter if you have a CAI.

Good luck, its a fair amount of work.

I'm worried about my emissions testing in Aug. I may need to get a smaller cam to pass...

High flow cats should do it. Any idea of what parts your missing on the AIR system?

What exactly does the AIR system do? I've seen that little filter next to my intake and always wondered what it was for.

Can anyone post a service manual pic of the entire AIR system so he can try and trace the missing pieces?

Unless the car was meant to be a dedicated race car I can't imagine why any of it would be removed...

FWI, i think the LG streets system are designed for 01+ passenger side AIR tubes only, I am not sure if the pros are the same. They should be able to get you the cats that will fit with those headers and they may also be able to hlp you with any missing AIR equipment... give them a try (once you know what you are missing)

OK, I fiinally got a chance to get under the hood and take a look. #1 I have all the parts for the AIR Tube system as described in MattB's post and they are hooked right up to both side of the headers. Also, there is a little sticker on my inner fender that has a diagram of all the emissions control parts. I have all of them except the PCV valve and 2 tubes, but I think I should be alright because in its place is a AMW catch can and a LS6 valley cover conversion. So I don't know what the mechanic was looking for I'll have to give him a call. And #2, put some cats on and hopfully i'll be alright.

They required it when I bought my car...but as in any place you will always find someone that wants to make a buck and can pass you. My car was all jacked up..cats turned off, air pump off and whatever else they could turn off and it showed up on my inspection when I made an attempt to get it done the right way. I have HP Tuners so with help of allot of different people on the forums I was able to turn it all back on and be legal. Its just not worth having to worry about it once a year.
Good luck...its good to see you want to do the right thing.
