I want to change out the fluids in my 99 Convert with 100k on the clock. I use mobil 1 now. What about teh rest? Lucas oil, Summit Racing, Castrol, there's a zillion out there. In addition, what about seal treatments, and oil treatment fluids. Could this extend the life of the car? Using gas, oil, trans, rear end treatments. Just wondering if there is a science out there, or if someone knows what fluids are best, and which ones to buy?? Thanks
I've got 160K+ miles on my '00 hardtop, and I've used M1 products throughout, mainly because they're easy to get and are fully synthetic. My main rule of thumb is to use full synthetic fluids where possible. Brand of synthetic is up to your personal preference.
Engine oil: When Oil Life Monitor tells me to "Change Oil Soon", which happens when predicted life is less than 10%
Transmission fluid: Every other year, or every year if you track your car
Differential fluid: Ditto. Make sure and put in a bottle of GM LSD Additive
Brake fluid: complete flush every two years or annually if you autocross. If you run DEs, then you should already have a feel for when to bleed your brakes.
Coolant: Every 3 years
I bought my car with 12K on it and changed every fluid in the car, I used as many Mobil 1 prouducts as possible, everthing else brake fluid, antifreeze etc I used the better stuff off the shelf at the local auto store.
Thats the cheapest thing you can do for a car, that will keep it running trouble free.
