I have a sharp clunk that I get at really slow speeds when the wheel is turned fully to the left. It is a single POP and seems to come from the front of the car, possibly right front.. It is not easily reproducible. It usually occurs when I’m backing out of a parking space or pulling in. The upper and lower control arm bushings “look” good, and their bolts seem tight and in place. I attempted to check the ball joints and the tie rod ends. (Although I’m limited in my ability to do so) With the rim mounted, it all seems tight. I’m thinking I’ve missed something, didn’t check well enough, or I’m completely off track.
Please help with some suggestions on what to check, or possibly what it could be.
There are bushings on the sway bars too, and they are known for making noise, but in that situation, my guess is its a shock or some other circular horizontal bushing "spinning"
Ie it gets under stress and then releases, and spins, making the noise you hear.
JMon, My Car did the same thing when I first Got it. I did a lot of reading and found something that basically said that sometimes the bolts that are loosened to perform front end alignments will work loose. I tightened these and other bolts that I could access and the problem went away and never came back. Hope this helps.
I forgot to mention that a lot of people will loc-tite the bolts to alleviate this issue. I was going to loc-tite mine but the problem never came back.
Good stuff. It sounded like ball joints to me. But I guess there could be something loose.
I have a thud that is coming from the rear. I've had Corvettes of Houston look at it twice and they could not find anything wrong. I guess I need to get it on a lift and get someone to tighten everything they can get a wrench on. Hope it will go away. Good luck with your noise.
