Default Temperature rising

I have a 99 vette and the temperature in traffic goes up to about 220Farenheit, when the temp. out doors is about 54degrees Farenheit. Is this normal? I thought with the winter weather the temperature would drop to about 190-198.??? On the freeway,my temp stays about 190-198.Is this normal? :chevy :flag :flag (STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER) :chevy :flag :flag :flag

That's funny... I was just about to post the same thing. Or something similar. I think it's because in traffic you are not moving, and the airflow under the hood / over the radiator is not as fast. In traffic, you are getting more cooling effect from the air.

You would think that the fan would kick on and pull extra air... the other night while stuck in a traffic jam in Baton Rouge, the outside temp was mid-60's or so. My engine temp got to 226, which freaked me out when I noticed. When I got to where I was going, I checked under the hood to see if my radiator had been cluttered up with leaves or other highway trash, nope, it was clean.

So I (also) would like to know if this is normal, or if maybe my thermostat is sticking, or something else I should look at. I have a 2001, but the question is the same. Thx.

Dave

I have a 178 degree thermostat and a fan motor controller which turns them on a 178. In traffic, in hot weather, 80-90 degrees, my temp comes up to 220. Otherwise it stays around 196 cruising. I don't know what will happen in the cold weather yet, as it hasn't gotten cold here yet. Hope this helps some.

Rod,

I don't know about you but you car is normal Outside temperature has little to do with coolant temperature. It's air flow through the radiator. When you are in traffic it will go up. At about 228 degrees the fan will come on and the temperature will go down. If you turn the a/c on the fan will come on and cool you down quicker. This is the way the C4s and C5s work. It's an emission thing. :flag

Look under the car at the front of the radiator. All kinds of stuff can get in there. Make sure it's clear.

It sounds completely normal. Stock, the fan is supposed to come on when the engine gets up to a certain temperature and not turn off until it gets down to another temperature, both of which have nothing to do with outside temp. My LT1 Trans Am did the exact same thing. If you sit for a while and watch it, you'll see it cycling up and down within a certain range.

When highway cruising, however, the temperature should drop down to near your thermostat rating.
