Hello folks - I'm new to this forum, but visited many times in the past as a guest. Just bought a low mileage 2004 CE and found that it leaks gear oil between the auto trans and diff. The axle seals and side covers are dry. My local Chevy dealer put it on a lift and confirmed my diagnosis. They said the trans and diff both have to be removed and the diff taken apart to replace the input seal. Conventional rear drive cars had a pinion seal that was easy to replace. Oddly, the Chevy overhaul pictures don't show how the input is sealed, although it would be aparent after the case is opened up.
The rear diff seal is just a big o-ring that goes between the diff and trans. I don't see why they would need to remove the trans... Its a fairly simple procedure, just lower the rear subframe enought to slide the diff off, replace seal, slide back on, bolt up rear subframe and exhaust etc.
