Ok I'm helping my dad out with his C5 and there are some real hijinks going on with his AC. The passenger side blows cold but the driver's side blows hot. It is an intermitten problem with no consistency.
There must be some exchanger or bypass that moves cold air over...I'm stuck.

Very often cold air out of the passenger side vents and warm air out of the driver side vents means your system is low on refridgerant. This is almost always true if you are not getting any HVAC codes.

My '98 did the same thing a month ago. As per the service manual, I unplugged the HVAC fuse from the fuse panel under the passenger side foot well and then plugged it back in. The same thing can be done by unplugging the battery and plugging it back in. Apparently, the actuators can loose there "memory". That is they don't know if they are open or closed or somewhere in between. This power off and back on allows the HVAC actuators to recallibrate. It worked just that easy for me. Hope it works for you too!

Hi, the first thing to know, is the car the dual zone auto system, or manual with 3 dials. If it is a manual system, then you probably are low on refridgerant, and need to add some up to the proper amount, add a bit of ref oil with it. If the car is the dual zone system, then you can try to re calibrate your actuators, by turning the key to on position, and pulling fuse#27 which is in the pass side footwell electric center, wait a minute and replace the fuse. If that doesn't fix the problem, then check the refridgerant pressures. If they check out good, then you may have a control head problem, or a bad actuatot door, or both. On both systems you should confirm that your vacuum lines are not broken or loose, the main vacuum line comes from a port on the back of the intake manifold, and routes through the wire harness over to the vacuum tank in the wheelwell area under the battery and battery tray, it then goes into the car through the firewall and connects to the vacuum distributor located behind the lower insulator pad in the dash on the pass side behind the glove box. From there the lines go to the various mode, heat, and air controllers. The actuator doors for left and right on the dual zone system are controlled by electric motors
Good Luck

Had the SAME gremlin last week. Was low on freon. Filled to factory specs and problem solved. I'd start with the easy fixes like this one first!!

If Not fixed yet. have someone disconnect the neg. to bat. Have the engine first at operating temp. with a/c on high both sides. turn the ignition key so it blows air through the vents. Have someone by hand touch the neg. terminal to bat. and hold it there, if problem still exists do it again, I can almost garantee in just a few min. u WILL get COLD air coming out drivers side ,just like the pass side. I did this same fix just 3 days ago when i disconnected my bat. every time i loose juice i do this procedure and it hasn't failed me yet!! the acuator gear Has to line up and this way your chances are very good that u will get that cold air to the drivers side. Let me know when u get too cold
