Default Question on Hawk HPS Pads

I put a set of Hawk High Performance Street pads on with my Eradi-Speed rotors. They say they are "low dust" and "rotor friendly" but mine are as filthy as a steel mill and the rotors are showing wear after only a couple of thousand miles. They do stop great but the black dust is too much for me to put up with considering I drive my C5 every day!

Does anyone else have the Hawk HPS pads? If so, how bad is your dusting/rotor wear?

If this is typical for Hawk HPS pads, I may take them off and get some Raybestos Quiet Stop or EBC Green Stuff pads for daily driving and save the HPS pads for the track.

I'm wondering if I got some "Plus" compound pads miss-boxed as HPS.

I agree, but they should not advertise them as "Extremely low dust"
See it on their web site: http://www.hawkbrake.com/product_features.cfm

I have them also, but only use them on the track. Too dusty and squeaky.

[EDIT] Oops, I have HP Plus

I agree totally with your frustration as I studied their web site info quite a bit before I decided on them as the pads I'd use...But now that I have them I've decided to put up with the dust to get the performance  :yesnod:

Default Hey Man!! :)

I have the Hawk Autocross pads with the new Eradispeeds. They stop well and they dust very well too. My rotors are cracked already but show no sign of wear. Just too much heat and not enough cooling. :( Seems to me that pads that say low dust are also pads that dont stop the car well or last as long. I hope whatever you end up with make you happy in the long run. As for me it looks like I will have to get a Big brake system to fufill what I need the Brake system to do for me.

I'm wondering why you felt you wanted to upgrade from the stock pads. Are you doing some track events?

These comments about Hawk HPS dust are interesting. I have been using the the HPS' for over a year and feell that they dust no more if not less than the stock pads do, and stop better..

Check with Shawn at LAPD, I believe he is of the opinion that if they are broken in correctly that they do not dust excessively.

If I remember correctly, the stock pads do dust pretty badly too.

I have had them on for about 4 thousand miles thus far and have found no more or less dusty than stock pads... If dust is a major concern of yours, IMHO, you should consider kevlar composite or something along those lines...

I put them on because the stock ones were worn out. They came in a package with EradiSpeed rotors and stainless steel lines. I bedded them according to the inclosed instructions. The dust is MUCH worse than the stock pads. The front wheels are black in 3-4 days of normal driving. The rotor wear is obvious. That is why I think I may have gotten the HP Plus pads in HPS boxes.

I guess I'll have to pull them off and see if there are any part number markings on the pads themselves.

My rears have HPS printed on them. I can't read the fronts without taking them out of the calipers.

I've been using the Hawk HPS pads for over a year now. I have less dust than with the stock pads. I put them on after I wasn't pleased with the stock pads performance with the Bear cross drilled & slotted rotors I had put on earlier. The Hawk pads and Bear rotors are an excellent combo for me. I have 20K+ milkes on the roters now and no warp. I have very little wear to rotors since I switched to the Hawk pads. My main purpose with these mods was reduce the frequency of turning the stock rotors due to warpage and I felt the C5 should stop much better than the all stock setup allowed. I have two 98s - one torch red coupe and one black convertable - both with auto trans. I was lucky to get 6k miles before the rotors would start to warp. My better half usually gets 12k on hers before I have to turn the rotors. Changing to Bear and Hawk completely eliminated this problem. :smash:

I don't notice any more dust than the stock pads!

There is much discussion in the racing section about pads and I'm still reading, evaluating, and learning from them.

I'm not satisfied with the Hawk HPS' track performance regarding wear tappering, so I'm trying to decide what to go with next.

Evaluate why you have a performance pad on your car; if dust is a major issue then go to the best pad for dusting...if it's performance, you gotta deal with the dust.

If you want the best of both, you could change pads for track events and put street pads back on for the rest of your driving.
