Default No Codes but no start either....:( Need some help guys

I have a 99 that is not showing any codes but when i turn the key to ignition i get nothing. It sounds like the steering lock it activating and deactivating upon key on and off. Battery is brand new. We installed a new tranny (well used with about 30,000 miles on it) and just re-connected all the wires in the proper locations. I did not dissassemble the neutral safety from old or new just disconnected the wires and re connected after installation of the newer tranny. Gave the starter a few cracks with a hammer and the grounds look good. Any idea what may have happened from one tranny to another ? Something electrical or just timing with some stupid column lock issue or theft deterent isssue ? Any help is greatly appreciated. Anyone want to come down to the Jersey shore and help out i will have a beach tag and some cold ones ready for you !!!!

There is no neutral safety switch on the tranny, so I'm not sure what you are talking about.

Do your lights, radio, etc ... work.

If they do you probably have a bad clutch safety switch.

Crawl down by the clutch pedal. All the way at the bottom you'll see a litttle black stop switch. Pull off the connector and jump the two connectors with a little piece of wire.

Try to start car. If it works you need a new switch, about $10.

You can leave the jumper wire in place until you get a new one. JUst be aware that you could start your car in gear and get into an accident.

Another thought, is the security light flashing?

Default Failed to mention....

It's an automatic transmission not manual so no clutch. Only time the security light comes on is when the door is open.

First thing that you need to do is verify that the battery is 100% charged and operating correctly. Next: Are the battery cables properly torqued to 11 ft/lbs???

If you turn on the head lights, do they operate correctly and shine bright?

Turn the ignition switch to the START position and hold it there. While your holding it, press and release the clutch to operate the safety switch. As you do that, you should be able to hear a relay in the passengers foot well click each time you release the clutch off of the safety switch. Thats the Theft Deterrent Relay.

Place the car in neutral, chock the wheels, set the brake, Turn the ignition switch to ON: MAKE SURE IT IS OUT OF GEAR!!!!!!!

If you remove that Theft deterrent relay and jump the PURPLE (starter solenoid wire) to the RED (hot 12 VDC wire) with a jumper wire ,,,the starter should crank the engine and the engine should run.

That should help eliminate a bunch of stuff or prove a bunch of stuff bad.

Let me know how you make out. Be careful when you preform that jumper test and make sure the car is out of gear!

It still has a safety switch, except it is on the tranny. Try putting it into neutral and starting it.

The safety switch is built into the tranny shift switch. I don't have a picture but maybe somebody can post up.

Default Trans Neutral Safety Switch

Hi, It is possible that when you installed the trans and hooked up the shift cable, the alighnment of the neutral safety switch was not the same as the trans you removed, neccessitating a cable adjustment. Try to start the car and at the same time run the shift lever slowly back and forth between park and drive and see if the starter catches somewhere along the way. BE AWARE that if it does the car will lurch if it catches on reverse or drive, so its best to have a foot firmly on the brake, set the emergency and don't have anything in front or behind you to close. If that works, you need to adjust the shift cable.
Another way to test it is to back probe the connector that goes to the neutral safety switch there is a yellow wire in the connector that sends the 12 volt signal to the theft deterrent relay, which sends the signal to the starter, with the shifter in park or in neutral turn the key to start and see if you have 12 volts coming out of the yellow wire coming out of the connector, or it might be easier to check the yellow wire for 12 volts as where it connects to the TDR. Also check mini fuse # 14, and 21 in the inst panel fuse box. 14 sends power to the neutral safety, and 21 sends power to the backup light switch.
If the switch checks out ok, your problem is elsewhere.
Good Luck

You can still do the same test. Just shift in and out of park or netural. When you do, the relay should operate.

Default neutral safety switch

Does anyone have a picture of the neutral safety switch and its location. I have the problem where the car will not turn over. Everything works but no start and no clicking like the starter is trying.

I have replaced the theft relay and the battery. If I take the car out of park and shift down a few times then put it back in park. Pull the key and replace it, most times it will start the car.

Yours is on the side of the transmission where the shifter linkage is. It sounds like your shifter linkage needs adjustment since it will work if you fool around with the shifter.

I ended up figuring out that the transmission end of the shifter cable was all buggered up and was not sliding correctly in the sheath which meant it was not totally shifting into each gear so i ended up replacing the whole cable and she works fine with a little adjustment. Thanks for all your input fellas. I appreciate all the help.

I know my cable is bad and the car is stuck in drive. I need to drive the car until the cable is here, Can I cheat the swirch so I can start it in gear? I have a big stall so the load is not bad.
