Default Warm engine

Hi Guys

While driving in stop and go traffic at the beach I noticed the coolant temp going up over 220 degrees and more, when the car was moving the temp went down. Also noticed the fans where not running, later in the day I heard the fans going again, the fans don't seem to be running when they should. My car is a 2003 C5 with a six speed, who knows where the fan control therm is, also is one fan controled by the AC only or do both fans come and and off together?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Ron

How hot has the weather been there? It is normal for that temp to fluctuate like you described. I believe the fan comes on at roughly 225 deg and the a/c fan runs when the compressor is running (below 35 mph ?) I dont see anything out of the ordinary.

The weather was about 83 at the beach almost no wind and the temp went up when we where waiting at a signal. The reason I was a little concerned is I have never seen the coolant temp go up like that and I have owened my car for almost a year.

Thanks for the info. Ron

It's regularly over 100 here in Houston and when I'm driving home from work in stop and go traffic I'll see 235 degrees in the coolant. If you want your car to run cooler you can go get it tuned and have the fan settings lowered.

Hi
A friend told me to turn on the AC, that will start up the second coolong fan and the temp will drop. I don't think I need tunning the car runs really strong but I will keep that in mind.
I might try new antifreeze and a 180 therm and see how that works out.

Thanks for the help, Ron

Check your owners manual for the stock fan temp settings.

Both fans have a low and high speed and both operate together at either the low or high speed.

Following is a condensed description of how the cooling fans work for model years 2001 through 2004. (For earlier model years 1997 through 2000, the stock fan set temps are somewhat different.) This information along with a full description of how the cooling system works can be found in the Engine Section under Cooling System Description and Operation of the GM Service Manual specific to each model year:

Cooling Fan Operation:

For model years 2001 through 2004, the PCM operates (commands) the 2 fans together as follows:

The engine cooling fan system consists of two electrical cooling fans and 3 fan relays. The relays are arranged in a series/parallel configuration that allows the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to operate both fans together at low or high speeds.

The low speed is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 226 degrees F. It is turned off when the coolant temperature lowers to 219 degrees F. The High speed is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 235 degrees F. It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 226 degrees F. When the A/C is on and the coolant temperature reaches 185 degrees F, the low speed will be turned on when vehicle speeds are less than 35 mph.

As seen in the post above you are experiencing normal operation. Some people freak out but there is no need to do that. The car can handle more heat than their brains.
