New owner here with some questions
I have been reviewing several threads on this site and have a couple of questions as I just purchased a 2000 Black on Black coupe.
Anyway, here are the issues:
1. Key Fob does not work. I tried replacing the battery with no luck.
2. I had to lower the headlights manually as they would not go down. The owner said it was the switch and that they work when the twilight option is on. I have not yet taken the car out at night to test this so am unsure if this is the case.
3. Oil pressure sending unit is bad. Owner said it was replaced 4 weeks ago and went out again. It seems after reading on this site that is a very common problem.
4. Check engine light is on. The car has a vacuum leak that will be repaired under warranty along with the oil pressure unit. I checked the codes and it did look like the vacuum leak is the cause. I hope this fixes this.
5. Tire sending units do not work as wheels had been replaced. Do you even need these?
Sorry for all of the questions as while I have owned several muscle cars from the 60's this is my first modern sports car. Any thing else I should look at as a mechanic did look at the car and verified the suspension was good and that all of the seals had been replaced in the rear end and tranny.
Thanks,
Jim
The key fob may just need to be relearned. To do that:
1. key in ignition and turn to on.
2. turn of radio
3. hold options and press fuel four times to list any codes.
4. clear all codes
5. press options until the screen is blank then hold reset for 3 seconds
6. fob training will be displayed
7. hold lock unlock down together and it will honk when done programming and then go to fob 2.
If this does not work you may have to get a new fob and then do all this anyway. I have a 2000 also, this is my second set of fobs and it is doing it again.
Search for headlight threads, there are fixes but too long to describe in post.
There is a good thread for replacing and relocating the oil pressure sensor. Mine went bad too but luckily only once so far. See one of the threads at the top of the tech section.
I don't know how to answer 4 and 5. My engine light keeps coming on but it is because of a knock sensor problem. Tire pressure monitors are great to me but you may have a different outlook.
BlackZ06 posted this telling how to get the codes:
You need to display your DTC data. If you don't know how to do it go here ....
https://www.corvetteforum.com/techtip...D=26&TopicID=1
When the AUTOMATIC display completes it will enter MANUAL mode. In that mode display and write down what codes you have.
A code looks like this ...... P 1234 C
The first letter will be either a P, B, C, or U ..... indicating which system the code is for.
The following 4 numbers are the code
The last letter will be a C or an H (sometimes both).
Post the ENTIRE code (as in the example ..... P1234C), and list ALL the codes found.

See page 2-9 in your Owner's Manual, it explains how to train the fobs. If you need a copy of your Owner's Manual go here ....

You can test the Twilight Sentinal in the daylight. The light sensor is located in the large vent on the top of the dashboard cover. It is in the small "hole" at the drivers end of the vent. At the other end is a small "dome" shaped sensor. Put a towel over the sensor and it should be dark enough to fool the car into turning on the headlights. If they pop-up and come on ... wait a few seconds, then remove the towel. The headlights should retract. Most likely the headlight switch on the stalk is going bad.
3. Oil pressure sending unit is bad. Owner said it was replaced 4 weeks ago and went out again. It seems after reading on this site that is a very common problem.
Replace the sensor ... not much else you can do about it. Take a look at the "sensor relocate" sticky at the top of this forum if you want an easier way to replace it should it fail again.
4. Check engine light is on. The car has a vacuum leak that will be repaired under warranty along with the oil pressure unit. I checked the codes and it did look like the vacuum leak is the cause. I hope this fixes this.
If it's under warranty then whatever has to be done should be covered.
5. Tire sending units do not work as wheels had been replaced. Do you even need these?
You should have the sensors installed and working if you have run-flat tires. Goodyear calls them EMT on the sidewalls. The good news is a runflat that has lost air can be driven on for a limited distance and at limited speeds. The bad news is you cannot see that you have a "flat" visually looking at the tires, and a high speed maneuver with a "flat" can easily lead to loss of control and the resulting consequences can be ugly. The sensors are there to warn you that a runflat is flat so you can immediately get it serviced.

The oil pressure/vacuume deal sounds related to the engine light on. When they replaced the oil pressure sender they probably didn't get the vacuume line connected at the back of the intake mannifold. This will also give you the 410 code related to the A.I.R. system not operating since it needs vacuume to operate a solonoid switch. I would guess that your HVAC is not operating properly either. Does it blow from all of the vents no matter what you set the control too? The vacuume line controls the doors inside the HVAC system.
When you replace the oil pressure sender DO NOT OVER TORQUE IT! As I recall it sould be no more than 15 pound feet of torque. The replacement units are aluminum and you can damage them by over tightening.
I think I would try the key fob relearn procedure to correct that problem. If not, fobs can be had on flea-bay. I got a pair for $36 three years ago and haven't had any problems.
The twilight feature can be turned off through the option button on the DIC. I turned mine off when I bought the car. I didn't like the headlamps popping up every time I started the car in the garage.
Good luck.
Ok,
The key fob is a lost cause as it still does not work so I will buy a new one.
The headlights work with the twilight turned on and do not when off. In looking at this my guess is I need to replace the blinker, cruise, headlight switch. Right?
I checked the HVAC and the code history and do have the following:
P0410
B0361
I think this is related to the vacuum leak issue and should be fixed with the repair of the oil pressure sensor / vacuum leak repair.
I hope I purchased a good car as it is a 2000 black / black coupe with 80K miles that has had all seals replaced, new C6 black / chrome wheels.
Thanks again as this has been a fun time reasearching cars again.

The headlamp question may be one for Bill Curlee. See his sticky at the top of the C5 tech section. Don't hesitate to PM him with a question. He is one of the most knowlegable tech guys on the forum. I know he has helped me out a time or two.
The thing you gotta remember about these cars is that as great as they are, things break or wear out and need to be fixed just like any car. Just don't give up, somebody here has had the same problem before and fixed it. Welcome to the forum and good luck.
I see Bill Dearborn has responded to one of your threads. He is another great source of tech information here!

It will save you the cost of a new switch and you will have bonding time with your car!
While your in the dash, it would be a great time to look and see if you have a column lock bypass. If you don't,,,, it would be HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to spend the 50-60 bucks and install it. It will save you tons of headaches and cash later down the road!

Well, I changed the battery in the key fob and it still does not work so I will purchase a new one this week.
The twilight does work as the headlights did function so I will be taking Bill's advise and cleanign the switches and looking for the bypass lock as suggested.
Also, I found out that the wheels do not have the sensor installed as they are in the stock wheels and was told they are good. When I replace the tires I will hva ethe TPM sensors installed.
Looking forward to getting the car all fixed so I can start upgrading several things...
Thanks again,
Jim
I ordered a new headlight / blinker arm and will replace this week along with the key fob.
I took the car in for emissions even with the vacuum leak and it failed for the air system. My hope is when they replace the oil pressure sensor again and fix the vacuum leak the car passes as all else seems fine. Also, I did drive it for the first time today on the highway and it seems to run / shift and drive very well. This is a great forum as I have been racing cars, bikes etc for years and have always enjoyed working on them as well. However, this is the first non 60's or early 70's car I have worked on....quite a difference.
