EVERYONE'S SQUABBLING IS GETTING OLD
I do know that people buy cars sometimes for reasons other than bang for the buck. The Porsche TT is a masterpiece of automotive perfection. The Viper is more of a brutal beast dating back to the old Cobra 427. These cars are more for a "different" driving style. The new Vipers are coming out with almost 530 HP. A Porsche TT will trick out to an easy 500 HP with some tweaking of the turbo. It would cost a lot of money to get a C5 there without significant engine work and NOS. But they can NOS, too.
But I highly doubt that the average Porsche TT owner is concerned about racing from traffic light to traffic light. If that owner wants to race and is serious about it...he's gonna want our C5's on the twisties where he is gonna shut us down fast. A Porsche TT is an easier car to drive at the limits than is a C5 or particularly a Viper.
Let me make an analogy here: I used to be in with the Mustang crowd, and guys would go buy a $10K 92 LX 5-liter, slap on a $3K Paxton Supercharger, crank it up to 20lbs, and a huge NOS system and run 10-second 1/4 miles all day long. Yes, it would beat the heck out of almost anything on the road in a straight line. But, so what? The value of a car is not how fast you can get it going in a straight line. Most of those guys never understood that. But, they bought the car to do just that, and that in and of itself is fine.
But I just got irritated after a while when I bought my LT1 (back in the day) for $28K and had Mustang guys coming up to me razing me about it costing so much, calling it a "Yuppie Sports Car", only having 300HP, and not being a good bang for the buck. Then they would start on the cost of mods such as a 3.73 or 4.10 rear-end swap in a Stang costing $400 installed (I did it) versus $2000 for the Vette, and so on...I won't go through an itemized list here:-) It basically was a fact that the Vette was more expensive to mod and to have worked on than the Stang. Heck, you could buy performance parts for a Stang in a freakin Walmart or Kmart:-) However, I wanted a higher-end car with more stability, gusto, and class. I simply wasn't interested in running against a 20 year old kid in an f-body or 5-ohh that was going to hit me with a 250 shot of nitrous at every light.
I bought the Vette because of the car. I loved it. Now I have a C5. I love it. I would not trade it for anything. Yes, I am going to mod it because I love to drive fast and raise hell with Tattooma and Joeyg;-) But, I know my limits with it. I am not going to go spank a 911TT, Viper GTS, or modded Supra TT. I'll try and just have fun. If I win then great:-) If not then better luck next time:-)
Best Wishes This Holiday Season,
I agree that the C5/Z06 is the best bang for the buck on the market - period.
In comparison to the Viper, Porsche TT, etc. the $$$ that are saved can easily be poured back in to a C5/Z06 and make it much more faster. Then again - how much faster do you want a rocket on rails to go??? :D
The cost of Modding a Vette is more than a Mustang or Camero, but MUCH less than modding or buying parts for a Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari, etc.
Take a C5/Z06 to the track and it will run circles around the older cars - such as a 427 Cobra or a '92 LX Mustang - and most of the newer cars.
As for 1/4 mile - the more $$$ you have the faster you can go. Period.
I think that what most people need to realize is that it is not how fast you can go around a corner or how fast you can do a 1/4 mile, or how good of a driver you are compared to others, but rather, what makes YOU happy with the Automobile you are driving.
For me, I Love the Vette for so many reasons: It represents AMERICA on many levels... American Pride, American Passion, American Legend, American Strength.
I'm more than happy to run up against the vipers, Supra TT's and Porsche at the track. It's fun :D

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
At this time when alot of people have American flags in and on their cars...as a Corvette owner I feel like I don't need to have a flag on my car, the car itself is the symbol of the american automobile...just like the Harley Davidson as a motorcycle

Like x-rckstar said, you can't compare cars in a single dimension based on a few testing stats. It's the whole package.
There are a lot of cool cars out there today. Ask yourself (and you can't consider selling the car) Self if I had a (fill in the blank) or my modded C5, which one would I keep. Then what you choose is the best car for you.
Well, you wanted something other than "best bang for the buck"
But I'm still tryin' to picture this one.......
With respect to the guy who stated that the Camaro is the best bang for the buck......I would say I agree. There are so many mods you can do for less money on basically the same motor and faster for less......I have owned one..but in the end I always wanted a Vette..not a Porsche, or a Viper, or any other German thing..although I do like that 260HP Acura and Subaru WRX. Has nothing to do with my user name either.
