So I am currently stuck at the fire station after being relieved 3 hours ago... I brought my '01 Z in to tinker with some things.... When I went to move her closer to the building in our parking lot... I turned the key and there it was... "Service Column lock"....
I just called a local dealership and asked the service guy to look up any recall work done... He stated that the reprogram was done 08-14-04. I asked if that included some sort of harness.. He said that manuals only got a reprogramming.
I have disconnected the battery, pulled fuse #23 and replaced it.. No dice... This column lock is determined to make me a statistic.
I guess even if I was lucky enough to get the wheel to unlock I can't unplug the motor because I have been reprogrammed if I am reading all the threads right.
I just figured if they did the recall work there was a new K harness envolved.. So aside from being flustered I am confused.
I currently have a couple emails sent to a couple forum members but am shooting in the dark in hopes some one might gander at this and have some knowledge to share I can use Aside from the fact that I need to send COH some money Thats on my list today!
I believe only the A4's got the harness installed on them. Since yours is a M12, the only thing the programming did was to shut off the fuel at 2 mph if you try to move the car
IF you do get the column to unlock, don't remove the key! Of course, order a CLB from www.corvettesofhouston.com. Good luck
Try pulling fuse 23 the BCM and the reinsert it. Mine locked up last week and doing this unlocked it. Then I drove the car home and let it sit until I got the Corvettes of Houston CLB. It took about 20 mins from start to finish to install, so easy a caveman could do it!
Thanks Blu I tried pulling #23.. Same result.... Guess Ill try the wheel yank a bit more Duke...
I read the bulletin and it said something about the lock plate being pulled during recall in the revised Feb. 2006 bulletin. My '01 was reprogrammed in the summer of '04 before the 04006B revision in November and then the 04006C in Feb.
Cscokd sent me an email today while I was loitering at the fire station. After being relieved 7 hours prior I went out and took my new friends advice... I inserted my key, worked the steering wheel with some force(trying not to yank it out of the dash from frustration then turned key and wallah! The worm gear did its thing and John(Cscokd)saved the day!
Thanks to all that helped try to bail out the dumb fireman!

If you're young, limber, small, and don't wear bifocals, MAYBE you can do it in 20 minutes. I know you're smart enough 'cause in your avitar you're wearing a Red Sox cap. Did mine earlier this week with the Corvettes of Houston CLB. My advice is to toss the directions from COH and use the following:
Just had my 97 with 55K do it Tuesday,I tried all the tricks to no avail. Towed it to dealer and they good willed it as it had shown that the recall was done a few years back at another staelership but guess what....it hadn't been after they got in there. Got to wonder what other recalls were "done" also.Thought about calling GM and having the rest of the recalls inspected!

The CLB is on the way!

The last recall also included removing the lockplate, even on manuals. You might want to do that so at least you do not have to deal with a locked column.
You could still have a problem with the harness relay failing, but you will be able to turn the wheel. (although if the dealer is correct, you do not even have the recall that installed the bypass harness)
I just had the same thing happen to me I think. The only difference is that I had the recall done on my 2000 C5 about a year ago and ever since; my steering wheel would occasionally lock up at slow speeds while turning the wheel(sounds crazy right?) for example pulling into a driveway or parking spot. It would break free right away and didn't happen that often.
Yesterday, I got the message "Service Column Lock" and my car shuts off every 3ft if I try to drive it.
Will that CLB help me too?
Thanks for the Advise.
Since mine is a 2000 w/automatic tranny, that means my car is an A4 and I probably have that "K" harness installed right???
Do I have to find that harness and remove it when I put the CLB in?

Thanks Again!
I have a 2000 A4, that had K Harness installed during a dealer performed recall, which included removal of the steering wheel locking plate, and then failed, less than 500 miles later. I removed the K Harness, and pulled the fuses and reinstalled them, and the car started and ran fine. I ordered the CLB, from Thunder Racing and installed the CLB as soon as it came in the mail. That was over two years ago, and I haven't had a column lock problem / issue since then
