Default Crank pulley removal????

Just recently I ordered a underdrive crank pulley. I then relized what a job it is going to be to put it in. so i was wondering if anyone had a good writeup on how to get at the old one (removal of steering) and put the new one in. Any info would be apreciated. The one i ordered was the summit 25% underdrive pulley with new bolt and gator belt.
Thanks a bunch guys! Cory

Don't use LS1howto for the actual removal an installation but it will provide enough information to see what needs to be done. You need to make a correct installation tool to press on the new pulley. You can rent the removal tool as seen in ls1howto, but don't use the old bolt to push on. Instead completely remove the old bolt and use either a socket or a large washer stack against the end of the crank snout and push on that. You also need a new bolt or the ARP bolt and ARP lube. Your choice there.

Here is an easy to make installation tool:

Here is the GM installation procedure:

You'll need a few special tools to get the balancer off. GM has tool to lock the flywheel and a puller.

Over on LS1Tech there is a guy who sells a real nice balancer installation tool for like $50 bucks.

You should probably install a new seal in the timing cover while you are there.

If the ONLY thing you are doing will be putting on the underdrive pulley, I'd say that the effor required to swap the pulley is NOT worth it - IE: the horsepower gain from an underdrive pulley is NOT all that much (maybe 5 HP or so) - IF you are doing a cam install or something, then do the pulley swap, but DON'T waste your time swapping pulleys if the ONLY mod you are doing is the underdrive pulley - Lot of effort required for LITTLE gain, IMHO

Yeah well the real reason im doing the swap is cuz the crank pulley is wobbling, and I have been reading on here and guys had had big probs with that. So I figured i should take care of it now. About the special tools, my brother works at a chevy dealer, so hes gonna bring all the tools that we need!

Thanks a bunch guys! Cory

This is from an earlier write up I did.

Elevate front end of car securely, Remove both front wheels, take the tie rod end nuts loose and tap with hammer with the nuts still on to loosen the tie rod ends, take pwr steering lines off the steering box with 18mm wrench. for sway bar, remove 4-13mm bolts, and use 18mm wrench behind and in front of the sway bar links to complete sway bar removal, remove 2-18mm bolts holding rack, loosen the 21mm bolt holding the front of the body to crossmember on the drivers side, raise body with a prybar (you'll need to do this to provide clearance for removal of the rack). I use 2 prybars and pry back and forth to get the body up about 1/2" and leave 1 pry bar in place,. Slide rack out, do your business and put it back in reverse. I have also heard of people taking the rack loose and then using a tie down strap to pull it up and out of the way to do their business. If you have a manual trans, put the e-brake on and the trans in 4th gear. Remove balancer bolt, remove balancer with your GM tool. Install balancer with proper installation tool and not using the factory bolt. Many have learned this lesson!!!. Do not re-use balancer bolt, insert new bolt and torque to 37ftlbs plus 140°

I just did only my pulley, and it is not that bad. Remove the belts, sway bar, steering rack (mine went out the drivers side), and use a 3 jaw puller to remove, then install with the homemade tool listed above. The LS1 how-to is good, but you don't need to do everything listed. I did not remove my radiator, alternator, or PS pump/bracket.

I did not need to loosen cradle or do anything special to get rack out, I slid it out the passenger side wheel well, bent the tie rod down and slid it out the driver's side under the frame with no problem.

When I did mine, I just slid it out the drivers side. No loosening of cradle. Just took the right angle.

Correct, move it out the passenger side then bend the tie rods and slide it out and under the driver's side frame. Very easy.

If your brother has access to the special tools, then surely he has access to the service manual for your car as well. Why not just have him print it out for you? Much better following the manual than having to ask on the forum....no?
