Today I started the car and as soon as it started I got the...
SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING - SERVICE ABS - SERVICE TRACTION CONTROL - cycle.
After I reset the DIC, the ABS and Active Handling lights came on in the dash and stayed lit.
I drove the car for about 2 miles, went into the store, came out, started up - NO WARNINGS? Gone through 2 more cold starts and subsequent short drives - still no more warnings. If I run the codes I get TCS C1214H
Does this mean the EBCM (or something else) is getting ready to smoke? Do they give warnings ahead of time like this or do they just crap out all at once?
That's how mine started; the occasional message. Turn the car off restart and it would clear. What started as once in a blue moon became more frequent, then I was driving in some slush, put my foot in it - traction control kicked in then abruptly failed permanently with code C1214. I always had the C1214 code. I sent my module to ABSfixer (drove the car while it was out) and it has stayed fixed since then. Can't say enough about Brandon at ABSfixer - he delivers exactly what he promises.

That brings up the next question...
(1) Do I pay the $150+Shipping and have ABSFixer do their trick, or
(2) Do I have the Dealership replace with a new EBCM under warranty for my $100 deductible?
Have any improvements been made to the EBCM since 2001 release?
I wasn't under warranty on my 02 so that wasn't an issue. My understanding is that ABSfixer changes out some components on the EBCM circuit board that are prone to failure and replaces them with higher quality pieces so that the repaired units are less likely to fail, unlike the factory replacement which has the same potential problems as the original. You may want to talk to Brandon before you decide, or solicit some more info on the forum - I know there are several long threads on the EBCM topic
The $100 and the dealership gets dirty sounds like a no brainer. I also had mine die slowly. I sent it to the ABS fixer and can't say enough about his service. He is a lifesaver!! However, no busted knuckles, no greasy hands, labor with a warranty, and save $50. Sounds pretty obvious that the stealership should take the hit.

I agree. Even if I am right about Absfixer's improvements I would go with the dealer. ABSFixer will still be an option if there is a next time.
If you have the opportunity to have someone else change that thing under warranty for only 100 bux, do it. Unless you have the hands of a 12 year old girl, it is a royal pain to change that thing. I did it once and never want to do it again.
I know you've been working on some voltage problems with the car. Until that is resolved I'd ignore the C1214 for now. A low voltage will cause that code to set ... so it may not be anything more than that.

I agree - too many weird electrical things happening at once - have to get the voltage thing straightened out first! Replacing the ignition switch next.

C1214 and similar symptom is how my EBCM failure started. After checking the main ground and the connector, sent mine to absfixer to be rebuilt and haven't had a problem since.

and take into account the new part installed by the stealer will be the same inferior part taken out, plus the future hassle of whatever else they screw-up. The new one will fail the same way eventually. Then Brandon gets the $150. I chose Brandon and dirty hands first time 'round and it only took 30 minutes to install and check ride.
