Default Oil Filter Wrench

Have read quite a few threads where folks have problems loosening/tightening the oil filter and in some cases, poke a hole through it with a screwdriver to get leverage for removal. Bought a wrench at Advance Auto today, that solves the problem.

AmPro Cup Type Oil Filter Wrench, 74/76MM, 14 Flutes - 2 Step. Part #T70402, $4.98. The cap fits on the bottom of the filter and you insert a 3/8" Dr ratchet to turn. Slick

Thanks for that PierEagle. It figures that we need yet ANOTHER type of oil filter wrench.

sigh.

Me thinks that if you can't get it off by hand, that you put it on to tight in the first place. I tighten by hand and have never had a leak or had trouble removing it.

These do work great for oil filters located in tight places.

Not necessarily true. I have never put mine on more than hand tight, but the heat of the engine will make the gasket stick over time.
I have a metal filter wrench that fits the bottom of the filter and it has always worked to loosen the filter. I have tried other plastic ones and they seem to either not fit well or will flex just enough to slip. If you find a good metal one, buy it.

I also only hand tighten, but need a wrench almost always to remove.

The one I referenced is made of heavy guage metal and, for what it's worth, has a lifetime warranty.

Cheers

The one I just took off was installed by the dealer. Mechanic must have went ape. Had to fight it off with waterpump pliers and very little clearance. Didn't have the Cup Wrench then. Do now.

Have one, but have never had to use it (knock on wood).

Would like to see a filter company strengthen the bottom of the filter and add a 3/8" drive square where you could just slide in a breaker bar or rachet. That would be cool.

Not exactly what you've asked for, but pretty close... just watch out for speed bumps.

I took a 2" wide tow strap, sewed the ends up leaving enough to fit a bolt in, used a 02 socket, slide the ends of the strap in the socket and lock them in with bolts and I use it as a very strong strap wrench. I have used it a ton! If I remember, I'll post pics.

I use these on my C5 and the wife's vehicle - never a problem with speed bumps or dips, although I DO have the Z51 suspension option....

Default oil filter wrench

sears has a good "three finger" 3/8" drive that works very well on a filter that has been overtightened. i use it with a 3/8"x12" extension on my wifes trailblazer which is difficult to reach due to the crossmember.

That is the one I use as well. I have had it for a few years and it works great for the vette. Plus it is adjustable so it fits all sizes of filters.

I never had an oil filter that my big pair of generic channel locks could not get off.... But I have a similar filter wrench... Mines plastic since I most of the time use fram oil filters.... I believe I bought mine at kragen or autozone....

Oh my ...expect to hear plenty about your filter choice.

I also have the plastic cup filter tool, but it starts to lose it's grip after a few oil filter changes. I wrap a piece of duct tape around the filter and it's tight again...
