I have one on my 04 Vert. Not exactly sure how they work but the end result is that when the skip shift light comes on you are no longer locked out of 2nd and 3rd. Only had mine on for several months but I can't see how they would not be safe. I have heard that GM installed the Computer Assisted Gear Shifting (CAGS) to avoid the gas guzzler tax. May be an old woves tale for all I know. All I can say for sure is that it is a pleasure to not have to shift 1 to 4 when the CAGS decides to kicks in.
I've had mine for about 5 years on my 02 Vette and no problems. At all, none. The only reason the General put this on the car was to make the gas milage a tad better, nothing more.
Anyone who has a C-5 6 speed knows about the 1-4 shift.
Has anyone installed a Corvette C5 sloenoid?
Are they safe and do they work?
Thanks
Jim
They are safe & real simple. Consider this, you could disable the Skip-Shift by just unplugging it. The problem is the vehicle computer detects the disconnect as a broken wire or burned out solenoid & makes an error code. You avoid that by plugging in an approprate resistor (the Skip-Shift Eliminator).
Now the computer is happy (it detects what it thinks is the solenoid) & you're happy becuase it's just talking to a dummy device.
All this would have worked OK for me but I sorta like to baby the car around when I am not thrashing around in it. Personally, I suggest either using the resistor or getting the $20 kit... but to each their own.

You don't need it. You have several options:
1. Simply exceed 17 mph in 1st gear. Oh, bumper-to-bumper traffic you say???
2. Double clutch between 1st and 2nd. This blows the computer's mind.
3. Shift from 1st to 3rd (bumper-to-bumper remember) The engine is a torque monster and it still pulls stong.
The shift wiring actuates a solenoid which blocks any shift from first to any gear but fourth. The computer looks for proper rssistance of the solenoid, to make sure it is connected and working properly, if not it sets a code.
The bypass shows the proper resistance, the light comes on, but no solenoid or code, GREAT.
I recommend buying the commercial product, it has the proper weather sealed connector to prevent corrosion.
Haven't found a need for the eliminator. 17 mph in 1st isn't abusing the engine/tranny and just can get it into 2nd easy. Just DRIVE it!
I did this for a while-annoying in heavy traffic. All it is is a 22 ohm resistor-I measured the one in the COH version when it died (bad solder connection).
