C5 Skip Shift Eliminator?
Anyone who has a C-5 6 speed knows about the 1-4 shift.
Has anyone installed a Corvette C5 Skip Shift Eliminator?
Are they safe and do they work?
Thanks
Jim

I have one on my 04 Vert. Not exactly sure how they work but the end result is that when the skip shift light comes on you are no longer locked out of 2nd and 3rd. Only had mine on for several months but I can't see how they would not be safe. I have heard that GM installed the Computer Assisted Gear Shifting (CAGS) to avoid the gas guzzler tax. May be an old woves tale for all I know. All I can say for sure is that it is a pleasure to not have to shift 1 to 4 when the CAGS decides to kicks in.
Here's a link to an older thread about CAGS:

I've had mine for about 5 years on my 02 Vette and no problems. At all, none. The only reason the General put this on the car was to make the gas milage a tad better, nothing more.

Seriously, it's very easy to install (took less than 2 minutes once the car was on the lift).
An alternative - if you know someone locally who can reprogram your computer - is to have the CAGS programmed out.

Had mine since when the car was new in 2001. The dealer even installed it for me. The only problem is the 1-4 shift lite still comes on.

Now the computer is happy (it detects what it thinks is the solenoid) & you're happy becuase it's just talking to a dummy device.

Why spend $20. Why that's half a tank of gas. No, wait.....1/4 tank...., no it's 5 gallons, no....4, ?????...less???? LOL
You don't need it. You have several options:
1. Simply exceed 17 mph in 1st gear. Oh, bumper-to-bumper traffic you say???
2. Double clutch between 1st and 2nd. (This blows the computer's mind.)
3. Shift from 1st to 3rd (bumper-to-bumper traffic remember) The engine is a torque monster, it still pulls stong and you won't bog down.
4. Best advice - see first half of #1.

All this would have worked OK for me but I sorta like to baby the car around when I am not thrashing around in it. Personally, I suggest either using the resistor or getting the $20 kit... but to each their own.

Install one, one of my best mods.
The shift wiring actuates a solenoid which blocks any shift from first to any gear but fourth. The computer looks for proper rssistance of the solenoid, to make sure it is connected and working properly, if not it sets a code.
The bypass shows the proper resistance, the light comes on, but no solenoid or code, GREAT.
I recommend buying the commercial product, it has the proper weather sealed connector to prevent corrosion.

Haven't found a need for the eliminator. 17 mph in 1st isn't abusing the engine/tranny and just can get it into 2nd easy. Just DRIVE it!

I did this for a while-annoying in heavy traffic. All it is is a 22 ohm resistor-I measured the one in the COH version when it died (bad solder connection).
