Up till now I havnt had any problems with my 97, I drive it on the weekends.
It recently sat for about a month and when I drove it I smelled gas pretty bad, didn't think anything of it.
I checked my garage floor, nothing. The only time I smell it BAD is when its idling and parked or at a redlight. I have let it idle and combed over the engine bay and underneath, and can't find anything.
Any one have any ideas of what it could possibly be? Any notorius gas leak areas? Anything other than a leak it could be?
Glenn,
If the fuel filter assembly has a small crack in it that's leaking gas ...it will only leak when the fuel pump is active (when the engine is running)..once you shut the engine off, it stops. That may be why you see no evidence of gas on your garage floor. But you will smell it while running or just after you stop.
Just one possibility...
I have the same re-occuring problem with my '97. My leak is at the fuel filter.A replacement (twice) of the fuel filter helps for a short time which leads me to believe that the problem is with the o ring inside the line where it attaches to the filter, not with the filter. The filter is on the drivers side frame rail and drips down the rail onto the tank and pools a little gas on the aluminum tank shield. The smell is quite pungent. I'm going to attempt to replace the o rings inside the line ends at the filter and see if this solves it.Chuck.
i got it lifted and got under it and sure enough, it definately is coming out of the line some where, going to change the fuel filter and see what i get
it didnt look promising though, the puralator fuel filter didnt look much like the factory one, didnt even have the right mounting bracket, had to bend/cut it to fit, but it is back on, and looks halfway original *shrug* no more gas leak
