I want to upgrade my clutch but I don't want to have to replace the master cylinder. What do you guys recommend? And where can I get it?
Replacing the master cylinder is a snap - don't let that stop you from putting in the right the clutch. If you are under 360 RWHP, the Z06 factory clutch system will be a keeper and the lowest cost.
Be sure you order the '02 clutch..............it's NEW & IMPROVED.............
If they change the flywheel, or remove it........MAKE sure it is MARKED) in relation to the crank) prior to removal...............THE exact location is required, or you will have SERIOUS vibration problems, that cannot be reversed..............without MAJOR headaches, & $$$$$$$$$.
These are balanced from the factory as a unit...............want to hear the REAL story??.......ask RANGER.............he's already been through it..........
The answer to your question depends on what issues, if any, you are having with your stock clutch. Also what are you trying to achieve.
Perhaps a few words about that would help shape some recommendations.
As said above, I've learned a few things about the perils of a clutch install. So has Steve Row. You've race with both of us and know we're not risk averse. But ya gotta be careful when messing with a clutch unless it really needs replacement.
Hey Ranger,
It has been a while..... I was thinking about having Tony put in a T-1 Cam and valve train upgrade and maybe a z06 intake. I would guess I would be looking about 360-370 RWHP. I still have a stock clutch with 56k miles on it. It works fine for everyday driving but slips BIG time during hard launches at the track. I want something reliable but not real heavy duty or expensive.
Als98C5, if your heart is set on a new clutch, then, as Z06LS6 said, go for the 02 Z06 clutch and have the installer order it so that responsibility for the outcome is not clouded. Still suggest talking with Steve Row and/or me before you take that plunge.
Given the times you're achieving, are you sure it's slipping?
That was an unusally good run with the 12.57, my average is about 13.00. My 60' is always around 1.99 sec. If I try to launch over 2000 rpms, the only thing spinning is the clutch. I just think if I go with the cam, the clutch will become more of an issue. I'm trying to get my ducks in a row and put some money away.
Als98- how are you getting 1.99 60 ft times launching less than 2000rpm? My 98 bogs big time under 2k. My best 60 ft is around 2.04, but that is lauching at 2500-2800 rpm. My clutch will slip if i feather it too much, & again on the 1-2 shift. At 3000 rpm, I get wheel hop. If i could pull sub 2 sec 60ft times at 2k, it would put a lot less stress on everything. Any tips? My clutch isnt the best either. It chatters pretty bad when driving normal around town. I have heard so many nightmares about clutches, i dont want to even mess with it. As long as i dont slip/heat it up, it grabs OK. Thanks- SCOTT
I like the way you think! The T-1 cam has me interested. Tony has done a couple of C5 heads & cam jobs with great success using Cartek Heads and cam. He is considering doing his own packages, We'll see. Don't know of anyone going with a supercharger as yet, but it does sound interesting.
About the clutch, IMHO, you will be right on the line. I would go with the '02 Z06 clutch in order to retain good streetability. The Cartek clutch is an option, but you may have a little chatter from time to time. Same for the McLeod dual disc. Both grab HARD at the track.
Hopefully, this year will produce some new product that will clear up the very nebulous and expensive clutch issue for both C5's.
Let me know when you take your car to Tony's, I'll keep an eye on it.
