Default P1870 code, what to do

Got the dreaded P1870 code. Intermittent hard 1 and 2 upshifts, seems to happen at trans high temp, above ~200F. I guess my question is should I replace the valve body or should I go with the TransGo kit. If I go with the kit which one do I need. The one with the reamer tool for $125 or the on with the power valve for $40. Any other suggestions would be helpful. Thanx.

John; your profile doesn't have the year of your C5 or mods listed.

The high tranny temp warning doesn't activate until you get to almost 260 degrees.

97 completely stock. I do not get a high temp warning, it just seems to happen occasionally and when it does it seems the temp is between 200F and 213F.

I am not sure. I am going to do that anyway, but from what I can find out it seems like this is a common problem on the 4L60E from 94-99.

in it's simplist form, the P1870 code says...

with the converter locked, the measured RPM is higher than it should be at this MPH reading.

In other words - slippage is being detected. You can temporarily steer around this code by first resetting it... then driving with the shifter in "3".

Transgo ... makes a (small) shift kit that comes in a little orange box (PN/ sk 4l60e) thats always worked for me. Its a cheap fix and pretty easy to install. This is there small shift kit and not there full blow shift kit (reprogramming kit) that comes in a large white box.

There directions for the kit are funny to read also. Almost worth the $30 just to read em.

I have reset the code, but I dont want to do any further damage. I have to believe that to continue driving it will have to hurt something else.

I wasnt sure what kit I needed. I've done some research and this seems to be the most popular way to go with long lasting results. I thank I may go this route instead of buying a whole new valve body. Thanks.

That's an option; but you really need to discover what's causing the slipping (which is setting the P1870 code). It could be a bad tranny or torque converter (though I hope that's not the case) or just low fluid levels. You'd check the fluid level with the engine running.

Keep us updated !!!

The kit has a replacement valve in it and more or less is just for fixing p1870 code, can be used for slightly firmer shifts but thats more of the other kits job, also the term shift kit is patented by transgo so they put it on alot of stuff.
