I damaged one of my catalytic converters when my car went over a rock in the middle of the road. Although I can't hear any rattling at this point I can definitely see a big dent on the canister. My dealer told me that I should get it replaced but the OEM converter is $1800 bucks plus labor!!!!! :bs :mad Can anyone tell me what my options are? Should I replace them with the Random Technologies aftermarket cats? Anyone have any experience with them? Will I gain or lose anything by installing them?
Other than the physical damage, do you have any other symptoms that there really is a problem? Are you getting any O2 sensor DTC's set? If there aren't any other problems indicated, I wouldn't be in a hurry to spend any money.
You can use an aftermarket cat, but why bother? If it doesn't have a hole in it, and it doesn't make noise, who cares? I wouldn't even worry about it until and unless I failed a smog check.
The dealer is hosing you on price and quite possibly on the whole thing. Have the cats looked at by a pro and see what they say. Worst case is that you have a replacement installed - and that shouldn't run more than $200.
Since you have a 2001 coupe, this might be a golden opportunity to legally get rid of both your pre-cats and factory mains and replace with a less restrictive aftermarket setup. If you are planning serious engine mods, this is probably something you'll want to do anyway since you can't fit long tube headers with the pre-cats in place. Good luck!
Don't bother, as others have said, if there is no hole, then the Cats are still doing their job of removing unburned toxic stuff. Don't worry about it.
On you guy's ripping off your CTS..........the EPA, and new smog testing IS going to require that they be on, or you will not pass, and IF they are OFF, you can be fined $2,500,00 per occurence............think twice about deleting your cats..........the EPA monster has FINALLY awoken, and this will be more than likely a UNIVERSAL testing mode across the country...........
I think I would contact some of our forum supporting vendors such as Ken Fichtner and price the part from him. You can have a good exhaust shop install it or do it yourself. If you get the whole pipe, it is just a bolt in. Save the old one for the good cat if you need it later. Only problem with letting it go is CATS can cause major heat problems if they are not flowing well and you usually find out because of another problem that occurs. I think it is also a good idea to check your insurance coverage, you may just need to pay the deductable to set the car right. Good luck.

I am hearign the exact opposite here in Ohio (who has testing in some counties for a few years. Plans are underway right now to eliminate the testing completely on a state wide basis.
Smog testing of autos is the biggest :bs thing the environmental-cases have come up with lately.
Somebody posted the other day that they bought a brand new OE bolt-in 2002 Z06 h-pipe with cats from Ken Fichtner for ~ $1300. Shouldn't be more than an hour labor at any respectable muffler shop to install itif you want to stay factory stock, or they can also install aftermarket hi-po cats for a considerable savings as others have posted previously.
You could just replace the cat for a lot less $$$ but do not bother if it is nit broke don't fix it. Oh by the way a corvette will pass emmissions with out the cats as long as they don't look under the car. :yesnod:

Sounds too good to be true. You have actually witnessed this?
I've read previous posts on this forum about a clause in the Federal Car Emission Control law thats says you need to get some sort of document from a licensed emission check station that certifies your exisiting cat needs to be replaced. It is supposedly illegal to replace a cat without this document.
