Default Tires: Replace two or four ?

Obviously the rear tires wear a bit faster :blueangel: than the fronts. I'm at the wear bars on the rear but have some tread left on the front.

I was just going to 'bite the bullet' and do all four, but last night someone asked why? I didn't have an answer. I probably have anout 2,000 - 5,000 miles left on the fronts. I intend on buying the same tire.

Any reason why I shouldn't just replace the rears now and wait a few months for the front?

just buy 2 . no reason to waste the tread left on the fronts unless they are almost gone. my rule is if the fronts are more than 75% wore out or have more than 25,000 on them then replace them though.j.m.h.o.

i get 30,000 outta the fronts of my c4. but the rears only last about 7,500 if i'm lucky. havent had to replace tires on the c5 yet

My opinion is that you, as much as possible, want the tread depth about the same all the way around. This is particularly true if the rears have the least tread. If you drive in the rain, or God forbid, snow tread depth can be very important. Tires without much tread will hydroplane much quicker, (particulalry wide tires) and clog quicker in snow. If that happens the result is the back end breaks away much quicker than the front (Snap Oversteer). "Snap oversteer" is something even the best can have a verry very hard time recovering from. I guess this is a long winded way of saying you need equal traction all the way around and if you don't have that, you need, at least, to have the best traction in the rear. Big tires will hydroplane pretty quickly when they don't have enough tread depth to channel the water.

Just my 2 cents.

I was in the same situation earlier this year; I went ahead and replaced the fronts, kept the tires and sold them to a friend for $100. But then again, I was switching from GY to Pilot Sports.

I replaced the rears only after they wore out :jester several months ago.
There was still good tread on the fronts and I am going to replace them next month.

No reason not to just get rears. The traction between front and rear is not measurable enough to make a difference when running all runflats.

I don't know what the guy above is basing that on.

Thanks for the opinions.

As far as water or snow is concerned, it's not really one at all for me. My car, hopefully, will never see snow... at least as long as I live Phoenix. It rains so infrequently; I'm not too concerned with that either.

Of course, I have had to drive in the rain but that's an infrequent occurrence.

....same here for weather conditions that I normally drive in. I think when this situation presents itself to me, I'll get the backs first and then wait until the fronts are "illegal" before replacing them.

Unless you get a great deal for all four. I would get two and save the cash until you have too get the fronts. As much as these tires cost I would only get what is needed! :blueangel:

I would buy only the two that are needed at this time. Why spend the extra money if you don't have to.

Since you're sticking with the same kind of tires, I'd only replace two and save the money(or spend it on something else). If I was looking to change all around, I'd replace all four at tte same time. I will do that when I get a little more wear on the original Goodyear's and replace them all with something better.
