Thunder Racing is installing a cam on my car next week .They recommended changing the lifter trays on my car also because it has 90,000 miles. They are installing there TR230/224 reverse split cam. Since they have to pull the heads to replace the lifter trays, I told them to do a economical head upgrade as well. He recommended I go with the GMPP CNC LS-6 head (part# 20-88958665) with 65cc chambers since money is a issue. They are $1100.00. Does any one on here run these heads and will they be worth the money. Thanks for any input. My current mods ( SuperMaxx Headers, MagnaFlow exshaust, Halltech Stinger, Hi flow CATS with x-pipe, 4.10 rear. He did tell me that the head and cam makes a good combo that works well together and that it has made 420-450 RWHP on other LS-1 cars that they have done.
They are ported by LPE for GMPP. They do have rather large ports but are a nice head.
Are you sure on the price, I thought they were in the neighborhood of $900 each. That price may be "per head". If so, AFR's would be a better approach in my opinion.
That price is for each head. I have the 61cc version of those heads. With a small cam(LPE GT2-3) I have over 400 RWHP and a stock idle, and I have similar mods to you, but stock cats. The science of H/C selection has come a long way since mine were installed, but at the time those were pretty good numbers for such a small cam. They are good heads, but were developed for a particular racing application. If the cam you 've chosen is a good match for the flow characteristics of those heads, you will make good power. TR has been at this a long time, and I would think they know what combo's work. There are less expensive heads or more expensive, heads. The trick is finding the best combo. Ask them why they chose that particular combo vs the other choices. Perhaps the large ports yield the best performance with that cam, and they should be able to explain that to you.
Taken from a vendor site:
"Some of the best low and mid-lift numbers we
have ever seen from a stock size valve. These heads will flow over
200cfm at 0.300" lift and 290+ at 0.500". Fully assembled with the
2002 Z06 light-weight valves and the new ’02 valve springs. "
