I installed a used converter that I bought on the internet. It seemed like a good deal and the seller seemed to be trust worthy. It took me 3 days as it was my first Vette install ,even though I have done many other GM cars.I followed step by step instructions from another site that seemed very thorough. After I filled the trans and checked the level I went for a test drive. The car didn't feel right right from the start. It felt like a race converter of 5000 or so not the 3400 I was told it was.It took 2000 RPM just to get the car up a slight incline in my driveway.I took it back into the shop a raised it up on the hoist to check the fluid level. It barely took another 1/2 quart.II took it out again and drove around a few miles before giving it some boost. The converter will flash to 4500 and slips under light throttle.I think it's punched. Does anyone know if there is any way I could have screwed up the install? Ya.I'm pissed.
Thanks.
A high stall converter takes some getting used to. I had a 3200 stall Vigilante, and it drove like a tow truck. Rev'd too much in traffic, and with a loud motor I sounded like I was racing traffic that was creeping along. I sent it in for a restall as tight as possible, and it was much better. The stock converter was tight, the nice part about that is you could tap the throttle and the car would jump. The car doesn't jump off the line with a looser converter unless it's rev'd up.
The PI converters are recommended by trans builders due to the billet cover that doesn't warp. Trans builders don't like it when a converter disintegrates and causes a return of the trans.
The Vigilante I have is not the five disk model, so the converter I have is slipping at full throttle.
Long story short, do your homework before you buy a converter.
Did you fill it before you put it in? What brand is it? What mods are done to the car? What does it stall to when your on the brakes. Have you seen what it flashes at yet?
converter worked fine when i pulled it..its a tci ssf 3400..never flashed to 4400 ...i wish it did....2000 rpm to sounds pretty normal to me to get up a hill.....the converter has only a few thousand miles and maybe 6 or 7 runs on it..the most power i put through it is 410rwhp for 2000miles of weekend driving...offering the buyer a full refund.....even though its been 2 months.....i feel bad it didnt work out for him.....but by no means did i sell a junked converter...
If you previously had a stock converter and no real "trans" tuning was done, it may feel loose as hell. Contact you tuner (Hopefully a competent one) to make the appropriate adjustments in the tune. I may tighten it right up.
this may not be, but I do know there is some complicated way to fill the trans. Looks like you got it as mentioned before. thats the only thing i can think of. The tuning might be right, but it shoudn't be that bad with that stall. I've driven a 3200 and it's not that noticable.
something happen after it got into his hands....anyways no point ...just send it back to me and i'll send it to tci for testing then sell it with paperwork to back up the results
