Does anyone have any idea how in the world to take a six-speed shifter **** off? I ordered the Hearst six-speed shifter **** and can't get the old one off? Is there a trick to this?!

Pry off the plastic cover. Under the cover you will see an L shaped key, pry the key up and out. Unscrew the shift ****. It is easy "IF" the key comes out. It can be a real bear requiring penetrating fluid, vice grips, hammers, ect. Good luck.

It's a royal pain. You have to have a set of needle nose style vise grips to clamp onto the pin. It took two of us to do this job on a buddys car and we had to use a block of wood and a hammer.
I made a special tool to remove mine by bending a piece of flat bar, and filing a slot in it to match the ears on the key. Could be that I have too much time on my hands, but I did not smash any radio buttons, break any glass, or knock the mirror off.
