Default Difference in Alternators

Is there a difference in alternators? I think Gmpartsdirect.com ordered me the one for the '97-'00.

per NAPA, the same alternator (their part 2139125, or 139125) works on all 1999 models, and on manual trans 2002 models (not sure what year you're looking for - probably in your profile, but I got ahead of myself).

Part 2139183 or 139183 is listed for the A4 cars. The leading "2" on these numbers indicates a "standard" rebuild, while the six-digit numbers are for a premium version.

They also list a model with/without clutch, and a higher output model, for the 2002. I'm guessing the clutch version is for the Z06.

In any case, you may want to ship yours to J&J Chittendon in Artois, California (little burgh of about 300 people, a hundred miles north of Sacramento). They've done my alternators and starters for a while, and are good. Owner is Doug Chittendon (don't know which "J" that is), and his prices are reasonable. You'd also get to keep your original housing. May not seem like a big deal now, but I've been spending big bucks to get original date code parts for my 39 year old GT500 - one of these days, having all the stuff that left Bowling Green with the car may be useful. Also, he's bound to be less expensive than the factory jobs. Also, the big rebuilders are usually all about volume. Doug is all about hand-done work. Here's a URL that will give you the particulars:

http://www.merchantcircle.com/busine...s.530-934-8544

Usually I don't shill for someone, but Doug did the starter for my daughter's Saab for about $65, which was a good deal for sure. About half of retail at NAPA - I get a shop discount, but $65 for a solid job was still a third less than my shop price.

Have fun with it!

Looks like I guessed right - your profile lists a 2002 coupe. And DANG! A six year old Vette at 16!?!

I was 19 (back in the Nixon administration) when I got my GT500! Congratulations, and try to be safe. It would be cool to look back, 35 years from now, and remember lots of good experiences with that fast car, with no accidents to mar it. I had one little deal with the Shelby - slipped an over-width tire off a rim in a hard corner and spun, cracking the fiberglass valance panel in front. My friend with the 1968 Camaro hot rod got squirrelly in the rain and took out a quarter panel - much more expensive oops, and there was a beer (or two) involved.

Oh, the GT500 is still out in the garage. These things make excellent time machines when you get older. My son is 19, and has my old WS6 Trans Am...

Unfortunately I already ordered the alternator from gmpartsdirect.com. I wish I would’ve known about that place before I ordered it.

I believe in 2001, the A4 went with a clutch pulley. No clutch on the MN6.

Just recieved the new alternator today and they shipped me PN10353440 instead of 10316182. The only difference i can tell is the new one is a 145 amp instead of a 110. Will this thow any codes if put this one on my car?

Thanks
