Default 6 spd still feels knotchy

I thought after some break in that shifting would be less knotchy, but with almost 6k miles on it it feels the same. Would a new shifter smooth it out, or is this just another C5 trait? :smash:

IMHO, I thought that the stock shifter felt soft compared to my aftermarket B&M Ripper. With the stock shifter I didn't feel comfortable with rapid shifting and decided to change it fearing missed shifts. Your stock shifter may looses up after some more miles on it but I don't think that "knotchyness" is going away any time soon...

I think it's inherent to the design.

I changed my tranny oil to Amsoil and noticed a nice improvement in shifting. It was definitely smooter, but there are inherent characteristics that will remain.

The old addage "Compared to What". My opinion is that with a transmission designed for high horsepower and torque, all the little pieces, gears, shafts, syncro and blocking rings get larger. Then you have to move a larger mass which takes more effort, laws of physics. The designer gets to a point where no matter what you do that's as good as it gets due to the mass.

MY C5 shifts easier than my T-10 in the 62, but much harder than my 5-speed in my Honda Prelude. I guess the point is we have to compare apples to apples
