If you read your Owner's Manual it explains how the PCM calculates your oil life. You can display your "Remaining Oil Life" on the DIC any time you want.

The Owner's Manual also explains that you should change your oil when the DIC warns you to, or once per year, whichever comes first.

RTFM

I change my oil whenever my car tells me to.

I do anything my car tells me to. It's basically my "other" girlfriend.

Pull over before it blows!

Just go by the oil life monitor, which varies depending on how you drive.
Mine ends up being between 4,000 and 5,000 miles.

with all the above!

The oil life monitor is a pretty sophisticated thing and factors in many aspects of how you drive to calculate the oil's durability and useful life. If you drive more conservatively and always let the car fully warm up, your oil life will run down very slowly.

You can pull it up anytime by pressing the TRIP button repeatedly until it pops up on your DIC. I believe that is where it hides.

I have about 29% left after 4900 miles. Will probably end up changing mine next month.

You're correct ... there is no "light". Probably should have corrected the original poster ... when oil life is getting low you will see messages issued on the DIC warning you the oil is reaching the end of its life.

If you change the oil yourself you have to reset the oil life monitor system ..... two ways to do it ....

1) Turn key to ON (don't start engine)

2) Either display the "Remaining Oil Life" and hold the RESET button until the display changes to "Oil Life Remaining 100%" ..... OR ..... press accelerator peddle to the floor three times in a row.

Mine is usually once per year - never more.

Mobil1 only - GM knows best.

Also, you have 2 options - write down the milage and date (I put that sticker on my garage door, eye level as I walk through inside the house, constant reminder) you did the change @ or...use the "trip B" and reset that milage when you do the change, and use "trip A" when you start @ a full tank.

You are over-thinking this .... it is VERY simple ...... change the oil when the monitor tells you to ..... or once a year .... whichever comes first.

What "mileage" you get per oil change has NOTHING to do with the mileage I, or anyone else, gets from their oil. The whole point of the monitor is to, based on YOUR driving, get as much mileage as possible before ordering an oil change.

You might get 15,000 miles between oil changes .... I take my car to an HPDE once in a while so I'll get less ..... and some people who really "abuse" the car might get less than the old 3,000 mile "limit".

I've never, by the way, heard of letting oil accumulate 25K miles on it (with a filter change every 5k ..... why bother .... you've already practically changed the oil by 25k .... ) ..... that has to be the STUPIDEST way to "change" oil I've ever heard of.

Read your Owner's Manual .... if you think you have a better way to "manage" the oil ... it's your engine .... do whatever you want.
