Default Both Key Fobs not working...help??

I have searched and searched the forums to find some sort of answers to my problem. While I've been able to find others with similar problems, I can't seem to find any information regarding my specific issue.

I thought I would petition you guys for some help.

First of all, I've owned my 2004 Z06 since new. Both are the original fobs that came with the car. I almost always used the # 1 fob while # 2 sat in a drawer these last 4 years. This last week, I found that the # 1 fob was not working at all. The lock/unlock/trunk/alarm buttons were not doing anything. So, I went inside house and grabbed #2, figuring it would work. Same result, nothing happened.

I first tried to solve the problem by getting some new batteries. I put a new battery in both, tried both, and still nothing. So then I looked up in the owners manual around pages 2-8 through 2-11 and followed the protocol for re-programming. Still nothing. I'm not sure, but I don't think I need to re-program the fobs since they are the same that came with the car.

I don't know where to go from here. What is your experience? What is the next step I should take? My car is out of warranty, so I want to avoid the stealership at all costs.

Thanks in advance. I look forward to your replies

After a fob battery change you must hold down the lock and unlock buttons at the SAME TIME for a few seconds until the car horn beeps. You must be next to the car when doing this.

This only works for fobs that are already properly programmed to the car. You may have other issues. Are you absolutely sure fob #2 worked once upon a time?

Are your tire pressure monitors functioning properly? Do you have tire monitors (Z06)? The same receiver is used for both the tire pressure monitors and the fob transmitters. It is located above the drivers rear tire inside the luggage compartment.

Thanks for the reply. The Z06 does not have TPMS.

Before initially trying the reprogramming sequence for new fobs found in the owners manual, I tried what you said: Using my fobs that are already programmed to the car, holding down the lock and unlock at the same time for a few seconds. My horn did not beep. This is why I thought I might try the programming sequence.

#2 Fob has always worked on the car.

Any thoughts as to the receiver in the car being bad? I just can't think of what else may be the problem.

Please continue thoughts and ideas.

i think it is possible to put the batteries in upside down i would check to make sure this is not the case before you go any farther. i hope, for your sake, that is what it is. otherwise, they are pretty easy to reprogram and get working after a battery change. you might also pull your car battery lead and keep it off for 15 min.to reset the system. are you getting any codes?

good luck!

Default Fobs not working

Hi, have you checked fuses 33,34, and believe it or not fuse 27, in the ip fuse center? Also possible that your RCDLR--SEE BELOW, may have come unplugged, or is defective. Also as bluvette79 suggested batteries need the + facing up. Do the door locks function with the Lock/Unlock buttons on the doors, if not the DDM may be an issue, or the wires/connectors inside the rubber boots in between the doors and pillars may have shorted or come undone.
Good Luck

Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Replacement
Removal Procedure

Important
The Remote Function Actuation (RFA) system uses the same receiver as the Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system. The service replacement receiver must be programmed to accept both the keyless entry transmitters and the TP sensors. Refer to Transmitter Programming and Tire Pressure Sensor Learn in Tire Pressure Monitoring.

Turn the ignition to OFF.
Remove the left rear compartment insulator (1).

Gently pull on the retainer at the back side of the receiver (1).
Pull out the receiver (1) only enough to expose the connector (2).
Disconnect the receiver connector (2).
Installation Procedure

Connect the receiver connector (2).
Line up the receiver (1) with the slots on the retainer.
Snap the receiver (1) into place on the retainer.

Install the left rear compartment insulator (1).
Program the keyless entry transmitters. Refer to Transmitter Programming .
Program the TPM sensors. Refer to Tire Pressure Sensor Learn in Tire Pressure Monitoring.

With or without the programming sequence (through the DIC, reset when blank etc...) -- you may have to hold lock/unlck for quite some time.

like 10-15 seconds, which seems like an eternity.

Have you driven the car since you noticed they are not working? Just a long shot but is your battery dead in the car?

I did the same thing and left the interior light on and drained the battery completely dead. I went nuts with the fobs untill i manually opened the door and immediately saw there was no interior lights on

Just a thought

Thanks for all the thoughtful replies.

The car is driven on a daily basis. Nothing seems to be wrong with the car battery itself.

When attempting the reprogram, I held down lock and unlock for at least 20 seconds for fobs #1 and #2. Nothing happened. An interesting thought regarding the fuses...I might have to look into that further.

Any other ideas???

the zo6 does not have tpms? i guess you mean yours does not but i am sure they are supposed to. good idea on the fuses but do you know why the tpms stems were removed? (since you owned it from the beginning, you may know ) could be they didn't work which may be a clue to the fobs not working but one was working before the battery change, correct? i still think you should disconnect the battery for 15 min to reset just to eliminate system hang ups. kind of like a reboot with any computer.sometimes they get confused! when i changed my batteries i used the learn fob routine on the dic. try the battery reset and reprogram after you verify the fob battery position. just to appease me if nothing else

Jim,
I don't think any 01-04 Z06's came from the factory with TPMS???

I think they came with the inflator kit but that's it....

I'll try the reset by unhooking the main battery this evening.

Any other thoughts in the meantime, please let me know.

Thanks for your help!!!

Borrow a fob and try training. If not possible, the 2001 and up fobs are very inexpensive. I'd buy one to try. It may be the receiver.

What ended up resolving this? All the sudden this afternoon neither of my fobs work...sounds like a similar story. Noticed my TPMS isnt working either at the moment....

This can happen when the battery is weak in either the fob or the car. I would definitely look into the strength of the car battery. My brother couldn't get his fob to work this weekend either. He tried the reprogram and holding down lock and unlock and it didnt work. I put the key in the ignition, held down lock and unlock for about 10 seconds and eureka! It worked. Not sure if it makes a difference, but it worked when I had the key in the ignition and turned one click.

It can't hurt to try.

Apparently in my case it was just the transmitters that were both dead

I just had a similar problem, remote failed, replaced battery still wouldn't work, brought a non passive remote after advise from this forum, dosn't work, pulled the codes as you need to do, I have the service manuals so I went through the check procedures, does your dash mounted trunk release work yes/no, mine was working sometimes only, borrowed one, non passive still didn't work, brought a correct year passive, bingo all works perfect.
