Check engine light went off itself on P1416HC code ???? ANY IDEA'S????
The check engine light went off. Does anyone know if changing Brands of Gas has anything to do with A P1416 code? The first time it happend,( the check engine light came on steady,) was when I was on Vacation and Changed from Amoco to Shell. After running thru the Tank of Shell the light went off and never came back on because I stuck with Shell. Christmas day I had to fill up with Amoco because The Shell was closed and The Check engine Light came on again. After running most of the Amoco gas out the Light went off by itself. Is there that much diffrence in the two Brands to mess up A sensor? All of the Amoco stations here in Daytona are now Shell stations so I try to stick with Shell, but on A out of state trip it sometimes is hard to pick A certain Brand when you need Gas. The car Runs great with the Light on or when it is off. :confused: :confused: :confused: :confused: :sad: :sad: :confused: :chevy :chevy

Crappy gas can definitely cause you to throw codes and set the MIL. I know what you mean about road trips... First time I suffered the fuel tank sending unit failure was near the end of the second day of a long road trip a couple years back. I filled up with gas at the next available station (oops...) when the needle dropped to E. Within 20-30 minutes the MIL set. Very nerve wracking at the time. :crazy:

A P1416 code means your AIR system either isnt working right, or your o2 sensors aren't working right. This code gets thrown with the computer tells your air pump to come on, but it doesnt detect (using the 02 sensors) that it did in fact come on. Usually the O2 readings will go low when the pump is on.
From the code, it looks like your passenger side o2 didnt show the results the pcm wanted. P1415 would be the other side.
If you have headers, I wouldnt even worry about it. If you have stock exhaust manifolds, maybe you should check your o2's or check valves. Headers have commonly screwed up check valves, but I dont see them listed in your mod list.
This isnt a code that will affect performance any.

The code will clear the MIL indicator after many ignition starts if the tests pass. I don't recall exactly, but it is something like more than 10 iginitions and some time requirement without having the code will clear the MIL. It is an issue you should consider having addressed. I experienced this, which gave me no actual performance or functionality issues, but I was told that in the long term, it is not good to let it go.

Here is info on when it will clear:
The control module turns OFF the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) after 3 consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostic runs and does not fail.
A current DTC, Last Test Failed, clears when the diagnostic runs and passes.
A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are reported by this or any other emission related diagnostic.
And here is a possible cause:
Carbon build-up in the exhaust manifold may restrict the amount of air flow necessary to affect the HO2S voltage. If you suspect this condition, remove the air pipe from the manifold and inspect the passage.

I have the same problem. Since you got both an H and a C it is a recurrent problem. There is a check valve that allows air into the system and is monitored by the 02 sensors. Something to do with emissions. Moisture can get in the valve and rust it causing it not to work properly. I've been told it is a fairly common problem. The fix is to replace the valve. Since it's the passenger side, the intake has to come off to get to it. About a three hour job. I keep putting it off and have been assured it will cause no harm to the engine or performance. You'll just be spewing out a few more hydrocarbons than you should.

BTW, you can clear the code manually if the MIL bothers you. That's what I do. I'll probably bite the bullet and take it in to be fixed the next time it comes on.

I had both the P1415 and P1416 codes and replaced both check valves and the AIR pump and I still get the codes. Someone mentioned the fact that headers may have something to do with it. I am inclined to agree. The codes started after I installed my B&B shorties. I just reset the DIC and don't worry about it. I can go for 4 or 5 weeks without setting a code then all of a sudden it will set twice in a day. :mad

Got that on my '98 intermittently for awhile, then it wouldn't leave;
had air-check valves replaced; a good bit of labor for the passenger side, even with a special homemade wrench to avoid intake removal.
A loose or faulty gas cap can also be a culprit.
