Default Heads Question...

In planning for future mods...

If I come across a used set of LS6 heads...would it make sense to buy them and have them ported/polished or buy new aftermarket ones?

Thanks for feedback!

That depends:

How many miles on the heads, and how were they used...i.e. DD. auto-x, etc.

Also, how good of a deal can you get on port and polish?

Finally, what type of mods you plan on doing in the future?

Well assuming they're low DD miles. Not sure what going rate is on port & polish? Mods in the future...wish I knew!

I picked up a set of 243s to have ported. When the time comes I'm going to have them ported by Cartek. If you get them ported by somebody that knows what they are doing they are definitly worth it.

If they are LS6 heads with the light valves, you will pay a premium for the heads just for the valves. If they are then ported and larger valves installed, that premium was wasted and you would have been better off with 243's from an LS2.

Just to add to this, what are your goals? What RPM are you going to spin the motor to? You need to start with your goal in mind, then put together the components that will exceed those goals. An example that may help you is, if you plan to really spin the motor you maybe better off getting a set of heads that already have the best springs, lightweight retainers, and over-sized valves, rather than start with a used set that needs to be disassembled, cleaned, machined, and reassembled with the correct components for your application.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the plug.

Give us a call if you have any questions. We work wonders with 243 heads
