I have a friend who just purchased a C5 and would like to do some mods (minor, doesn't want to void his warranty) What are some decent "bang for the buck" mods? Thanks, Chris
Re: Please educate me on C5 mods... (Mr turbo rotary)
Chris,
You will probably be inundated with a wide range of responses to your question but I’ll give you my opinion, for what it’s worth. I went with a free flowing exhaust system (Corsa Indy and x pipe) first, followed by a free flowing intake (K&N Stage II). Easy to do, not very expensive and doesn’t void the warranty. Wires and plugs were next. Again not that intrusive. There are other little things like coolant bypass, MAF mods and lower temperature thermostats that give a some improvement but, IMHO, could be an issue if a warrant claim is made. Now there will probably be as many who will disagree with what I’ve said as there are who agree (great country, America). But, in the end, it all comes down to what makes the owner happy and, to me, that’s the best reason for doing mods. – C.

I suggest your friend log on to the Corvette Forun and do a lot of reading. He/she can get a plethra of information by just reading and spending some time here. :) :) :)

Tell your friend a Corsa Indy with pro-tips and a BPP Vortex Rammer....After those two things are done, the people in here can tell you more :yesnod:

I'm with Mr. C's5..... do the intake and exhaust mods first and then drive it! Check the forum for ideas, but these two items will give the normal street car the best "bang" for the buck. :yesnod:

Hey Chris who else got a new vette around here besides me :D From what I have read the intake is the first to change. I have a new Blackwing and airbridge with silicon couplers just waiting to go on(should net 15 or so rwhp). Next is the exhaust, the Borla XR-1 is probably one of the best for freeing up the exhaust and losing some weight but is very noisey, not as bad a my RX-7 with mid-pipe  The next best will probably be B&B PRT's, which I have to be put on as well(maybe 5 rwhp). Mainly do the exhaust for sound, naturally aspirated cars don't get as big a bang for the buck changing exhaust as turbo cars do. Next up would be a cam and underdrive pulley. These 2 will make significant gains 20-30rwhp. From there would be to add heads and headers. With all of the above changes you should be around 420rwhp :yesnod: If the car is an auto then getting a powerloader is a must. It will change the shift points and take care of the torgue management program(this will make a big difference) also getting a new stall convertor, like a Yank 3500 will be a big help. If the car is a manual a Powerloader will only help out for raising the redline, turning on the fans earlier etc but not much of a horsepower gain. Best just to have custom programming done if its a manual. Thats pretty much it for bolt-ons. Next up will be n20(a 125-150 shot easy), supercharging(another 100rwhp), turbos(another 100-200rwhp), or going with a stroker motor or such.
I hope you make it to the dyno day with us. I plan on doing the first pull stock to get my baseline. Then add the intake, do another pull, then finally the exhaust and do a final pull. Talk to you later.

Ditto that...Vortex and Corsa Indys...and a Powerloader! :)
Air intake, cat back exhaust, & under drive pulley are worth 35-40 (easy) rwhp.
BTW: Mods only only void your warranty for that piece and what may be effected by that piece. In other words, a cat back exhaust will not affect the warranty on a defective window regulator but and air intake may affect the warrant on a problem MAF sensor.

Hey Lane, How are you ? Thanks for the info I will pass it along...I am going to try and come up and watch on dyno day...I know some other vette drivers and I am sure they are going..If you need tools/anything let me know...
Re: Please educate me on C5 mods... (Mr turbo rotary)
I appreciate all the feedback and info, thank you...I also have come to the conclusion (doesn't matter vehicle type) if GM or Ford or Mazda came out with a car that made 3000 rwhp we would buy speed parts and try and make it faster.. :seeya
