Default 1999 c5 auto steering column lock ??

Have a 99 c5 automatic, which all the sudden started displaying service steering column, and pull key wait ten seconds, now i'm somewhat aware of these and very mechanically inclined,so anyone with advice please help,i bought it used and the wheel will turn with the key out so i assume its been fixed on the recall?what other way can i tell?first things first, now a couple days ago i got crap fuel and check engine lite came on so i did the old unhook the battery trick for 2 hrs and that cured that but now this,so my question is if it has the update?how can i tell and if has had it what could be the trouble?the car stalls as soon as it hits 2mph,any help appreciated, checkin fuses 23-25,and the under dask harness tomorrow, wow what a great board, fellas keep up the good quality replys, first class, thanks

I had to take the dealer "fix" off mine cause it left me stranded. I wired it back up stock. Maybe someone can chime in with a diagram or something, it was simple like unplug this and plug this back in but I forget exactly.

I can't stress enough, get the bypass and remove the lock plate and get the fuel cut off tuned out. You will never be stranded again. Alot of tuners will say you can't tune the fuel cut off out but you can, I did it on mine and am lucky I did.

Default re steering column lock - need a clb ??

ok ,first, thanks to everyone for there input,i started out chargin battery, checkin grounds and fuses, fuse 23 [bcm] was blown in passenger footwell box, first i replaced it and it blew instantly,as my car had the dealer update,so i took the advice of several members and pulled the knee panel to find the k harness and relay under the drivers dash,i located it easily, unhooked k harness[eliminated] and plugged the connectors back to stock, replaced the before said fuse[23] and whalla !!! works fine and no message on dic,at least not yet, know my question if anyone has been thru this is should i install a clb or will it not do anything??as said before thank you to all,i will always give sound advice on the problems i've been thru !!great site,thanks,slammin99

install a clb. i just did it in my 99 and no errors. reprogramming the fuel shut point sounds like a good option but i think you will still get the message. i have read of few on here that have had a problem after the clb was installed.

On our 99 it turned out to be a bad BCM, and BCM relay. Read the "New CLB didn't work" thread in tech. I hope yours is an easy fix.

GM's flagship....lol (Joke). The Cavalier was more reliable. I'd chaulk another failure up for GM, but the chaulk board is full. I had to take the k-harness off mine and return it to stock to get it to move. Once in a great while the pull-key message comes up. when i start the car.
Out of all the vehicles ive ever owned the C5 is by far the poorest engineered and built one ive ever seen.

I hate to say but we see this all the time --- we do have a fix.
PLEASE call us at the dealership and ask for me or CJ.
We will get you back on the road.

I dont mean to highjack the thread, but I too have a 99 (6 spd) and it just started displaying the service column lock message. It sounds like taking the car into Chevy could be a mistake? More importantly does having the message show up suggest that the steering column could lock up while the car is in motion?

Could really use some advise.

Thanks guys!!

normally, no, but a column lock bypass should be in your near future. check out the clb sticky in the header above for more info. does your column lock now?

It did once maybe 5 months ago- If I recall correctly I went to start it and it displayed the wait 10 sec. message. I waited 10 sec, started it back up and all has been fine till it started pulling this code..

From what Im gathering the concern with this code is that you could go out to start your car and the column locks up and cannot be unlocked? And the bypass prevents this from happening?

My main concern was having the steering column lock up while going down the road

and bluvette79...

I really* appreciate you guys taking the time to fill me in!

It seems some experience column lock, some pull key wait 10 sec and others both. I experienced both, installed GM version, CL is gone but still get the pull key message. How can it fix half the problem and not the other half?

hi to all, after all the posts on this site about this problem i see i am going to have to get to the problem, when i do figure out what exactly this c5 wiring configuration is able to do without i will let everyone know,i seem to have a very good understanding after listening to all the posts and my own experiences,i try to take a little from everyone and put it all together as i have the lat 20 years with harleys and sleds, funnycars, etc, were going to look into the clb-k harness interconnect and see what exactly these do to the bcm-pcm circuits, as i realize they are just signal senders basically series wired into a security system,as with all post 1985 vehicles, cars trucks bikes atvs sleds, they all use pin type connectors and multiple grounding blocks which only multiply and greatly impede problem solving,i'm a bit of a self problem solver, not a genius,or a toilet jockey, just a mechanic, but i always, always get to the bottom of it,oem manufacturers because of epa and other regulations cannot by law and liability eliminate or "hot wire",or bypass any safety feature that is mandated by law,i am POSITIVE that this is exactly the reason why gm stiffed us,also remember that the gom mechanics are only knowledge limited to what gm tells them to do and they basically cannot be trusted for any REAL PERFORMANCE gains,as with bikes and sleds,we see all kinds of safety switches which work great when they are new but after some time in use ,wear,or electrical contacts do,and cause problem solving erratic nitemares,i will keep in touch with this,as when i'm aggravated i'm at my best, thanks

I would recommend trying every fix mentioned on the Forum first. If all else fails you can always take it in. My service contract paid for the repairs to our car, and our dealer service was great. But, I still tried to fix it myself first. I learned alot about the Column Lock issue on these cars. Good Luck on your repair.

Default Service Column Lock ...after changed tires

I was at Tire Rack in Indiana on Saturday and after they changed the tires..bingo..Service Column Lock came up. Were we ticked. The car had to be towed to Gates Chey in south bend. Long story short..now our car sits at a dealership in Indiana they didn't have the part(s) and we had to drive home in a rental.

The recall was done in July of 07 just before we bought it. The car is a 1999 and has only 21,000 miles on it.

Any advice on how to address this with GM?

Thanks,

Bill
