Gearhead...That's kinda' what I'm looking for too. As my title suggests, I was in denial about the seriousness of the noise. I don't really believe the cold to warmup noise bothers me as much as the noise in the 1400 to 1800 rpm range. This seems to have gotten worse over time. I use the A4 shift quite often and will shift 1-2-3-drive alot. Seems that the 2 gear between the rpm range really starts to scream...Soon as I shift up to 3, the noise disappears.
Third gear in that range is very quiet. Sounds crazy but I've had a buddy listen too. I'm going to my dealer where I bought it and at least get my complaints registered. Whether or not I get an admission of guilt from GM is not that important, as long as it's recorded. Even so, the decision to have them tear it apart is another matter. My '76 Vette had a faulty oil pump screen when new and I lost oil pressure on hard left turns. I brought it to a local dealer to analyze and they tore the engine completely apart, pistons, crank and all...Replaced rings and bolted it all together without even asking me. They said when you lose oil for even a short time, it was best to check it out. They did a great job and I never had another problem...Now that was 25 years ago and service was different. But I'm sure I would have agonized over the decision. Again, I will make my complaints known and see what happens...GeorgeC :seeya

I'm more in confusion than denial. Someone had previously posted that there is a pump or something that can cause the noise that starts a minute or two after engine start, not immediately. So first I have to figure out what is causing my "delayed onset" noise. Even if it is piston slap, I will probably not do anything- it may be completely harmless, and I have the GM extended warranty if it dies later.

Gearhead...You're right...There is noise (sound) which is delayed after startup. It does disappear a few minutes later when warming. I consider that normal. The time is variable depending on temp. I could only imagine how many things come into play during warmup transition....GeorgeC

Have you tried any other GM approved synthetics, like Red Line or Amsoil. Some claim these oils to have better low temp. properties and I would hate to think some of your cold starts are dry. Also have you checked to see if your cold oil pressure is quite a bit higher than after warm up?
I would consider Red Line its a great synthetic that have solved alot of problems similar to yours.Good Luck David S.XTREME(480)517-4969
