Default Dummy Airbags

I bought a 2001 Z06 that was hit pretty hard in the front, which of course deployed the airbags. I had heard somewhere that they make non-functioning dummy airbags to put in place of the originals. I can't see spending the $1000+ dollars on a used set, when I'd prefer to not even have them in the first place. Anyway, does anyone know if such a thing is available? ~Curt~

Except those $1000 airbags MAY save your life OR prevent your face from being horribly damaged !

Guess everyone has priorities with their $$$$$

In this day and time I wouldn't want to drive a car without them!

If you do not replace the air bags you are taking a large risk. If you sell the car and somebody is injured due to the lack of an air bag you could be held liable from a legal and a civil standpoint. One thing to remember is the seat belts used with air bags are not as strong as the ones that are not used with air bags. That is why the kit GM sold for turning off the passenger side air bag included a replacement seat belt.

By the way if the bags deployed you may also need to replace the seat belts. If they have been stretched in the crash (common occurrence) they are no longer strong enough to be used in another crash.

I guess that's a "NO", but thanks anyway and thanks for all your concern. This thread was not posted as a debate on the pros and cons of airbags, but merely a question about an alternative for the time being until I can afford the estimated $1600 for the real thing, not including what a service department would charge to install them. If need be, for now, I'll either not carry passengers or make them sign a waiver before they get in my car. As far as the next owner, there will be no next owner, this car is the last(9th) Corvette I will buy, I plan to keep it till the day I die, which in retrospect, I crash with no airbags, I die, the car is totaled, end of story.......

I'm a single, 54 yo man, work as an auto mechanic who just now, after over 6 years, is recovering from a divorce and bankruptcy, in which case I had to let the bank take my Pewter, 2000 FRC Corvette, I loved that car. I recently sold all my classic Chevy car bodies I had collected over the years so I could buy this crashed Corvette, since lending agencies laughed at loaning me money for the car I really wanted......that wasn't crashed.

Since May of this year, I've spent nearly every waking hour dismantling this car, replacing bent and broken parts with every spare dollar I can muster, including replacing the whole front frame section, cowl forward. This car will be like my child. Yes, it's a ZO6, but it doesn't mean I will drive it like the idiot that crashed it to begin with, drag racing it. As all of you know, owning and driving a Corvette is more an honor, than just a spin in some sports car. You treat it probably better than any woman/man you've been with. You carefully park it out of harm's way, drive it like it was full of explosives, and pamper it with car covers or climate controlled garages, for those of you who can afford it. But for those of you like me, low income, single household bread winners, with a little history of some bad luck, owning a Corvette is just a little out of reach. So, understand that yeah, $1600 to some of you is a drop in the bucket, but to me it just as well be $16,000.....If at all possible, I'd just like to cruise through downtown in my baby, knowing that I too can once again be the keeper of the greatest American sports car ever built.......at least until government safety standards require ejector seats!!!

Then tell us you would't drive it. There are any one of 9 (not all mine) vetts I can drive if I want to and only 1 is air bag equiped. I think we should still enjoy the other 8, even though I like air bags. By the way, I sure would like to own 1 from aatcars.com, if I did, I would drive it.

Google Air Bag Simulator. The way I understand it, they have a switchable network of resistors that start at .5 ohm, and go up to 6 ohms, in .5 ohm increments. Might want to do a little expermenting.

For a drag car project I am going to build a machine like the one in this video and make a couple of dummy panels to keep the stock look without any function, just use some abs sheet and black SEM paint. Here is the link
