hey guy's.i got this weird creeking noise in the rear.it does it only when im crawling along and turning hard left and hard right, say like pulling out or backing in the garage,or slowly pulling out of a side street to a main..it does it going both foward and reverse. there's no play at all in drive line and there's no vibe's at all at slow or hi-speed's.car only has 14 k on it.no racing or serious abuse.should i have the diff fluid changed? the one thing i did not try is with the t/c off.which i just thought of. the car is a 04 coupe with a-4 and 2:73 gear's....any idea's???thank's....al.
I've had a similar sound off and on. Under warranty, twice the service tech guy at the local dealership said it was the diff, and claimed is it simply wasn't getting the workout it needed. Mine's not exactly a daily driver, but I drive enough that it shouldn't have that sound, about 6k miles a year.
Both times, they put some additive and/or changed the diff and the sounds went away. Seems to last about18 months before it came back.
I only notice it when I'm in my underground parking garage at work, you tend to hear things easier because they're bouncing off the wall/ceiling around you.
If the noise is more like a clicking type sound when moving very slowly, backing up or moving forward, its probably not the differential. Probably the half-shaft splines need lubrication at the bearing hub assembly. Real easy fix too. Remove the rear wheels, 33mm socket to remove the axle nut, you'll be able to slide the half-shaft in and out about an inch if I remember correctly. Put a light coating of bearing grease on the splines while moving the shaft in an out. Do the other side the same and put it all together again. I thought the torque value of the nut was 140 FtLbs but not positive therefore someone else might know for sure.
thank's guy's.the sound is difinitly not a clicking you would here from a bad cv joint.it's a low growl type noise.also i forgot to mention is it does it only at a cold move or just sitting a while.once warmed up,no noise.every once in a while i get (traction control warm-up) on the read out.that too only last mabye 2min.im just making sure this is not a problem in the making...thank's again al...
I went round and round about this issue with my 01 and several lube changes and finally found the end all. Its a known issue with Vette differentials, some have major noise and some don't. The noise is the clutch packs in the positraction binding on tight turns. Have the diff lube changed and refill with GM 88862624, it's actually the diff lube for the C6 and Cadillac XLR which have similar issues. It's working great for me!
neaz, you hit the nail on the head.i was thinking it was something like that.i was waiting for someone to say just what you said.i will change the diff lube with the gm # you gave me .thank's ....all
Check your rear tires for cupping as they too will cause some growl type noise. I found that out the hard way after spending for a brand new differential that I didn't need.
dgrant, thanks for the reply.it just that this noise is at such a slow speed that a off road tire would be quiet.i think the problem is the clutch pack's in the diff like neaz said.not that im looking for the easy way out but it seem's logicial and point's toward it since there's no other issue's at all other then this faint growl, which im glad about.so,i'll change the diff lube and go from there..thank again..al. p.s. i have a better way to discribe the noise.pull a 4" old rusty nail out of wood with a hammer or crow bar.the creek the nail make's coming out is the closest to what im hearing.MABYE I GOT TERMITE'S!!!!LOL...AL
