Default Oil Pan Replacement

Thanks to a slow truck and the big rock it hide from my view I now have a crack in my '99 C5's oil pan. I have a replacement oil pan but was looking at the steps to replace the pan and it looks like you need special tools to compress the leaf springs and to support the engine while the crossmember is removed. Is there any (safe) way to do this job without these tools or should I just take it into the shop?

It is possible to change the pan but you will have to support the engine to have clearance to remove stuff. The spring can be removed and installed without the called out "special tool". Thing is the oil pan does not just slap on as it is a structural component and needs to be installed correctly. There are several checks and measurements for proper oil pan installation as describe in the service manual. Otherwise the transmission may bolt on but cause undue stress unknown to you until it brakes. There may be oil leaks due to misaligned of the pan in relation to the front or rear cover etc...

If your used to doing your own work, have the correct tools and can follow the manual closely go for it. If not take it to someone.

Thanks Mark... I found a local shop who's owner is very experianced with Vettes. He's doing the job cheap enough that it's not worth the time and hassel of figuring it out myself.

If you only cracked the batwing, I think you should be able to remove and replace it without removing anything else. It's just a bunch of 10mm bolts.
