Default Radar detectors......bang for buck?

I am 30 and just got my 1st tickett (73 in a 55). don't like it and don't want to repete it. Do you guys think that a detector is a worth while investment, or do the cops hide in places that render these in-effective....thoughts, experiencer?? Good and bad.

Also, Bang for buck for 150$ or under. I am only interested in PERFORMANCE, not bells and whistles I'll never use. Radio Shack has a 360 degree radar, laser detescto for 50$ off (130$). Anyone heard of these??? Thanx in advance.
Tom

Check out the lastest Car & Driver, they just
had their annual Radar Comparison.
IMO - Save for a Valentine 1. The upfront
cost is major but the saving (less tickets)
will add up. Good Luck!

There was a recent thread about detectors. Valentine 1 seems to be the favorite choice. I have a Passport 8500, and that has saved my butt numerous times. Eric

I have Bel 980, works great. No false alarms and always gives me great range. I have also heard that the Valentine 1 is great. If you decide, get a good one and don't cut corners, that will just give you a false sense of security. My vote Bel or Valentine 1. :smash:

I agree 100% - Don't skimp on a radar detector. The Car & Driver test had the V1 in front by a significant margin.

 What's the CO$T of the ticket......

Yep....see the C & D mag... article on Rader Detectors. The V-1...Valentine has been rated the best...year after year...after year. ;)

The added cost for the V-1 will pay for itself ..... in reduced insurance rates as well as not giving GIFTS to the local Mounties :D

Cobra ESD 9100, $89 at a Pilot Truck Stop as low as $69 online.
X, K, K/A, VG-2, Safety Alert, and 360 Laser.

I agree the V1 is the best. I have been on the highway for hundreds of miles with guys that have V1's, and they picked up the bogeys 1/4-1 mile before I did. The directional arrows are also very helpfull.

Having said that; my Cobra has saved me a few times and I feel it was worth the 89 bucks. I plan on giving it to my wife or daughter when I get a V1.

IMHO a modestly priced detector is better than none!

Pasport is best. It has the best laser detection of any (highway troopers usually use laser). And very good radar, it just doesn't tell you what direction the cop is in, it does tell you how close though. $200.

Enjoy :seeya

I have had V1 for nearly 2 years. It has saved me countless times. It has proven so valuable that a couple of months ago I ponied up another $200 to upgrade it to the latest version with the new/better Ka protection.

When I think of V1 vs. some of the other detectors, the best analogy I can make is that the V1 gives you "knowledge" where the other detectors give you "data". Those directional arrows really help you determine what risks you're running. And the bogey counters factor into that as well.

Good luck, sorry to hear about the ticket!

Lates,
Justin

P.S. I'm 29 and have yet to receive a single speeding ticket :smash:

I agree, don't skimp on the Detector. You'll be more annoyed at the false alarms and short distance of detection that it will end up in the glove box.
