Default Castrol Syntec?

I know that this oil doesn't meet all of the definitions for synthetic, but, nontheless, it is. My question is does anyone know how it performs compared to Mobile-1, red line, amsoil, etc. Opinions AND DATA are appreciated. It must be better than dino oil, I'm assuming, but is it as good as say, royal purple? the reason I ask is that the 5 Qt at Walmart now is 15$ and I may stock up. Thanx,
Tom

Sam's has Mobil 1 for 19.92 for a case of 6 or .32 more a quart. Why screw around?
Also the C5 calls for a specific GM spec number that Castrol won't meet.

I believe that Castrol does adhear to GM41 something standard.

I wish I could get mobil 1 for $19.
Here in sams club they have it for $28 for the case and $5 for a quart.

Castrol is fine, I used it in my VR4 3000GT, so use it in all your vehicles except anything that resembles LS1 or LS6 :nono:

Well, I just ordered a new BMW Z3, and they specify Castrol synthetic. I'm sure keeping the Vette, but it's a diffferent kind of car. I'll probably continue to use Mobil 1 in the Vette and use Castrol in the BMW. I don't really believe there's much difference, but why fight it if it comes to a warranty issue?

Depending on your dealerships where you live, I have heard that if you don't use the correct oil, they can get kinda snooty about warranty work. I think it is a fantastic oil but IMHO, I am going to do this one thing highly recommended by GM (Mobil 1 Synthetic) Just my $.02

Really now, I doubt that it makes much difference.

First, let me say I am not endorsing this oil, I haven't any exprerience with using it. (I use Mobil 1 myself), just providing info on it.
By the way it does conform to GM 4718M specs. :p:

Well you asked for both opinion and facts. Both Redline and Amsoil use a different base then Mobil-1 or Castrol. I chose Amsoil because it is fully tested whereas Redline is not.

As far as Castrol, the court case brought by Mobil re-defined what synthetic oil can be. IMO, Castrol has pulled the wool over the consumer's eyes and I won't buy their products any longer. So, the Vette gets Amsoil, my other cars get Mobil-1.

tslawsky:

Read the lable completely. If the oil is the "Fully Synthetic" one and either a SAE 5W-30 or a 10W-30, and it says on the container that it meets GM Specification GM4718M (Which is DOES meet), Then the oil is fine to put into your Corvette engine, and you will have no problems with any engine related warranty calmes in the future. :D

My corvette Owners Manual says "You should look for and use only as oil that meets GM Standard GM4818M." It does not specify a brand name. By the way, any oils that do meet GM4718M are SAE 5W-30 or 12W-30 grades.

These are the facts tslawsky. I hope that it helps cut through a lot of missinformation posted here. Personally, I use Mobil 1, Castrol, Pennszoil, or any other Synthetic 5W-30 or 10W-30 oil meetint GM4718M.

he funny thing about the whole GM/ Warrenty thing is that I actually have a 2001 Camaro and chevy recomends Dino oil and up to 10,000 miles per change (as per oil change light). Since it is still an LS1 I woyuld think that Syntec is much better, just wondering how it stacked up against the other available synthetics. I'd love to see an indipendant lab comparison battery of tests with synthetics and dino oils.

You can find a lot of oil info and data at the following address. The primary benefit of synthetics over conventional oils is superior lubrication at high and low temperature extremes. I've heard the reason GM uses a synthetic in the Vette LS1/6 is higher internal engine temperatures as compared to the Camaro/Firebird LS1s which get conventional oil. Castrol Syntec is probably fine. Personally, I stick with Mobil 1.

Another great benefit of synthetic oils is that they don't promote sludge buildup like dino oil can & does. Anywhere you get sludge in the motor you are bound to have oil passages impeded and/or blocked. Then there is the possibility of increased heat in those areas also.
Your car's motor will also turn over that much faster & easier when cold out. It also retains its viscousity properties longer than dino oil.

Castrol Syntec is a good oil and do fine in your Vette. I used it in my "other car" until I switched to all Mobil 1 a few years ago. Now I prefer Amsoil, because their data shows that they outperform all other synthetics. :)
