Default Bad habit...

I keep finding myself holding on to the shifter when I am gettin on it pretty hard and rowing gears. If in first I'm usually pushing on the shifter becuase on a few occasions I've found that I'm not quite in gear... Same with Second, I'll pull back while on it hard. Etc for 3rd and occasionally 4th.

I have a couple concerns based on the observations:

- I hear some weird noises, either whirling sounds or fairly loud low frequency knocking sounds. Usually knocking sound is in 2nd or 3rd.

First off, am I screwing anything up in the shift mechanism/tranny by loading the shifter like this? I know I shouldn't do it, it's just gotten to be a bad habit. I know I should have both hands on the wheel for that second and 3rd gear blast... just in case...

I've got an aftermarket shifter, and frankly I am NOT confident that I'm gonna successfully grab the gear, vs have it miss completely or pop out from partial engagement. I never had this many shifting issues with stock lever, and have to wonder if others are having these problems with aftermarket? I've got an MGW shifter and I love the quality and the way it shifts for 2-3 and 3-4... but the rest of the shifts require a lot of concentration...

Thanks in advance!

I have read that when you lean on a shifter or rest your hand on a shifter that it wears out the shifter forks and the synchro's prematurely.

Aftermarket shifters usually have stops that are adjusted so you don't stress the transmission. You put the trans in gear then adjust the stop so it just touches the lever or fork that way in goes in gear but as you yank on it the pressure you exert does not transmit to the trans, it only allows it to go far enough to get in gear.I believe on yhe corvette the stops are incorporated in the trans and that the shift linkage adjustment is critical but easy.Remove boot put in neutral press down shift control neutral lock pin, (located on rt. rear shift control assembly) loosen shift rod clamp bolt, loosen shift control mounting bolts( make sure they are loose enough so everything can find its center) then just tighten up(20-25 ft.lbs.)

Yeah I've heard same about the synchro's. I had forgotten about that.. I gotta stop holdin on to the shifter...

The MGW shifter has built in stops I believe and it's not installed/located the same way as stock, ie you don't use the little bent rod.
