I can't imagine why you would want to change out the PCM but you need a Tech 2 Scan Tool to do the job. RPO Codes, Security and who knows what all else. Don't forget the software/firmware updates from the GM TIS site too.
That makes sense. Wiring changes would be needed but can be done. I quickly thought of that post I too had seen before.. lots of wires to get right, connector changes and etc... but you are correct with the possible programming options.
I have mail order tune on a 98 PCM by ECS, this runs a Novi SC, long tubes, C6 manafold, ported polished TB, big injectors---on and on. Running app 7# boost A/F rario runs in the green most of the time on the wide band, and all the HP/TQ I am comfortable with a stock bottom end.

There's certainly no shortage of misinformation on the internet today. First, you don't need a Tech 2. There are no issues with security codes, RPO codes and "who knows what else". This forum would be a much more useful place if people didn't know what the hell they were talking about didn't post.
Ed Hutchings at AUtomotice Techonlogies in Portsmouth, VA did mine recently. I don't think he wants to do another one soon.
The advantages are a faster processor and finer tuning capabilities. It was worth it to me to get 513 RWHP running pretty damn close to stock. Once changed you will need to tune using EFILive. HPTuners doesn't like the VIN not matching the PCM year.
