I just got a great deal on an entire C6 shifter, **** and base for my car. It even came with the part that goes mounts onto the transmission. Is that the same as the one in my 98 or is the 06 Z06 shifter base different? I know the shifter it self is the same, its just bent and a little bid shorter.
Let me know if I should just replace the whole thing or just put the shifter in.
Thanks
Jimbo

There isn't a part that mounts onto the transmission since it is in the rear. I assume you are talking about the whole shifter assembly. I would recommend replacing the whole assembly. I can't think of a good reason not to in your case!
I am sorry, you are correct I was talking about the whole assembly, not just replacing the shifter itself.
You are correct, why they heck would I not replace the whole thing! I was just wondering if there was any difference in the base part.
Thanks

Check the bushings where the "box" mounts above the torque tube. Your oem bushings are probably rubber, whereas the C6/Z06 might be metal (as in C5/Z06) shifters. The rubber will isolate noise more, but metal provides a more solid feel...
Theres NO reason to change the housing. There the same BUT, like it was previously mentioned, the C5 housing is rubber mounted and the C5 ZO6 is not. If you elect to change the housing, you MUST do a shifter housing alignment check and adjustment.

The Z06 shift box ( on the left , don't look at the shifter arms )has hard grey plastic mounting bushings that sit almost flush with the mount tabs. The C5 shift box ( on the right) has black rubber bushings .[IMG][/IMG]. The internals are the same. The Z06 box feels firmer and transmitts a little more vibration.
Also before you take the old shift box off the tunnel, scribe the mounting location as a reference .

How do you do the adjustment?
I did a quick search and didnt find anything.
thanks

Basically you loosen the bolt that connects to the trans rod in back of shifter. Then you have the shifter in neutral with the locking pin in place (down). You then tighten the bolt on the trans rod and lift the locking pin up.
Sounds easy enough, How do you adjust the whole houseing itself. I noticed the big torx bolts have alot of adjustment room to move the whole housing front to back. How do you get the housing lined up?
I drove the car today and it feels good, 2nd gear is alittle tougher to get into but not bad. The shifter is 10x better than the stocker.
The shift **** feels much better also!!
Thanks for your help

Getting the housing lined up is a little hit or miss at this point. Like you say there is adjustment room there. That is why someone posted above to mark your old housing for reference before removal. Do the shifter alignment and if that doesn't do the trick try moving housing forward or backward a bit and try again. Eventually you will get it right!
If you use search or search this forum (in the red banner) in C5 Tech, try using keywords "shifter alignment procedure" or similar.
You should find past threads about the procedure, some with images and/or schematics from GM...
