Today while driving to work, i rolled down the pass. side window and the whole instrument cluster and everything in the car that has a back light went nuts.Everything started flashing and the gauges went crazy. After it stopped the service abs was on and traction control. While this was all happening i had to brake as i was coming to a light and it felt like the abs was on because the pedal felt like it was chattering. It happend a few times every time i hit the window button.
Any ideas?
Check your voltages in the car. you might have a loose connection at the battery, starter solenoid, alternator etc or on the ground side. A bad connection can be made worse when you have a significant load added to the power supply such as your window. Try adding another significant load such as turning on your headlights heater/A/C on high and rear defogger and see if it does the same thing.
On the passenger door, open the door and peel back the rubber accordian boot between the body and door and check for bare wires. If you find any, and I suspect you will, repair them carefully and then do the same on the driver door.
A common problem in the door hinge area (both doors) is that the DATA serial buss wire runs through the rubber accordion cover on both doors. Most of the time you will see bare wires at the electrical connectors.
When this DATA buss wire is momentarily grounded, ALL SORTS of strange and seemingly unrelated electrical problems appear.
Best method is to coat the exposed wire(s) with liquid electrical tape, followed up by covering the connector, and harness near the connector, with regular electrical tape.
Connection problems with the internal contacts in the connectors also cause problems, (corrosion or loose terminals), so also be aware of that.
